Indy 500 Qualifying 2016: Start Time, TV Schedule and Pole Predictions

Danny WebsterMay 22, 2016

May 29 will mark the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

There have been many noteworthy moments in the last 100 years of this historic race. From close finishes to memorable wrecks, the Indy 500 has long been at the center of the racing world alongside the Daytona 500.

While securing a decent starting position in qualifying should normally make an impact, that hasn't been the case in the Indy 500. The last four winners of the prestigious race, including last year's winner Juan Pablo Montoya, started the race 10th or worse.

Hinchcliffe Eyeing Redemption at Indianapolis

Nearly one year ago, James Hinchcliffe was fighting for his life.

At Indianapolis Motor Speedway, during an Indy 500 practice run, Hinchcliffe was involved in a life-threatening crash. He survived but couldn't remember anything about the crash.

Now, back on the track a year later, Hinchcliffe has a chance to be the pole-sitter with a good second day of qualifying on Sunday.

“All the credit to the guys on the Arrow Electronics car; that thing is a rocket ship,” Hinchcliffe said, per Mark Robinson of IndyCar.com. “We even dialed the engine back on that last lap. Not being cocky, but we knew we were pretty safe in the fast nine. That was the goal today."

Hinchcliffe is making the most of his road to redemption. The crash sent Hinchcliffe from the middle of the far turn all the way to Turn 4, from the grass back on to the track. The fiery crash obliterated half of his car and even flipped it halfway over.

But he's back, and he has a chance to write a new chapter at Indy in one week's time.

"I can't thank the boys enough. What a difference a year makes," Hinchcliffe said, per Robinson. "It validates all the effort the guys have put in. These cars started getting put together back in February. They put so much effort into the cars for the month of May.”

Winning the Indy 500 would be the perfect culmination of events for Hinchcliffe. That crash is fresh in race fans' minds. It was scary. But he survived and is back with a chance to make history.
