2 Horses Die After Participating in 2016 Preakness Undercard Races
What is supposed to be a joyous Saturday at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore began on a tragic note, as two horses died after separate Preakness undercard races.
According to ESPN.com, Homeboykris died after collapsing while walking back to the barn following a win in Saturday's first race, and Pramedya was euthanized after she broke her left front leg during the fourth race.
Daniel Centeno, Pramedya's jockey, suffered a broken right collarbone when the horse fell to the ground with her broken leg.
Included in the ESPN.com report is an official statement from PETA asking the horses' owners to release the animals' veterinary records and medications they took in the last two weeks:
"Studies—and our own investigations—have shown that most breakdowns and deaths occur because horses have pre-existing injuries that are masked by the excessive use of legal medications. We want to know if that is what happened in the cases of Pramedya and Homeboykris. We have been advocating for no medications to be administered to horses in the two weeks before a race so that if a horse is sore or ill, the track veterinarian will be able to detect it. In today's racing drug culture, at least three horses are dying every day on U.S. tracks. The foolish use of muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other medications must end now.
"
Homeboykris trainer Francis Campitelli told Jake Lourim and Jonas Shaffer of the Baltimore Sun that signs pointed to "some sort of heart attack—you know, ruptured aorta or something like that."
The nine-year-old gelding will undergo a necropsy at Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center.
Campitelli said Homeboykris "was in really good health for a nine-year-old horse. When we claimed him, I was really amazed at how good of health. He had no infirmities in his legs."
Saturday's race was the horse's fourth event of 2016. He had 14 career wins in 63 races.
