IPL Results 2016: Latest Scores, T20 Points Table, Schedule After May 8 Fixtures
Gujarat Lions produced an excellent display to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets on Sunday at Eden Gardens to arrest a three-match losing slump and move to the top of the 2016 IPL standings.
Dinesh Karthik's half-century was the key contribution for Gujarat as they chased down a target of 159 to win with two overs to spare.
Earlier in the day, Sunrisers Hyderabad notched their third win in succession, hammering Mumbai Indians by 85 runs.
A brilliant innings of 82 not out from Shikhar Dhawan helped the Sunrisers post a strong total of 177 for three after being put in to bat. In response the holders crumbled, losing five wickets inside the first five overs before being bowled out for 92; the excellent Ashish Nehra grabbed three for 15 with the ball for Hyderabad.

Kolkata Knight Riders vs. Gujarat Lions
Gujarat, 164 for 5 (Karthik 51, Kumar 2 for 19), beat Kolkata, 158 for 4 (Shakib 66, Pathan 63), by five wickets.
KKR made a nightmare start to their innings, having been put in to bat by Gujarat.
Their top four all fell in the opening six-over power play, Robin Uthappa the only one of them able to make it to double figures as he scored 14 before being dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni.
Pravin Kumar was superb, restricting runs while also taking the wickets of skipper Gautam Gambhir for five and Manish Pandey for a duck.
Suryakumar Yadav then went to Dwayne Smith thanks to a stunning catch from Suresh Raina, via IPL:
At 24 for four, Kolkata were in dire straits, but a fifth-wicket partnership of 134 from Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan saw them to a defendable target.
Shakib finished unbeaten on 66 and Pathan on 63, the pair putting in a battling effort and proving that KKR can still be dangerous even if they lose early wickets, per cricket commentator Ayaz Memon:
However, having restricted the Knight Riders to 158, Gujarat looked in pole position to beat their hosts.
Smith and Brendon McCullum gave the Lions a solid base, both producing scores in the 20s and putting together an opening partnership of 42.
Raina added only 14 when he came in at three in the sixth over, but Karthik was the man who saw GL to victory.
His 51 came from just 29 balls and included eight fours and one six. Aaron Finch also played his part, smashing 29 from just 10 balls to make sure there was no nervy end for the Lions.
The Australian was run out with the scores level, but Ravindra Jadeja smashed a six to secure an excellent victory for Gujarat with 12 balls to spare. Cricket writer Harsha Bhogle analysed an excellent batting performance:
The win sees Raina's side back into top spot, while KKR stay in third—just two points back from Gujarat.
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs. Mumbai Indians
Hyderabad, 177 for 3 (Dhawan 82*, Singh 2 for 29) beat Mumbai, 92 (Singh 21*, Nehra 3 for 15) by 85 runs.
After opting to put the hosts in to bat, Mumbai needed to do their utmost to prise out one of the Hyderabad openers early. But Dhawan and particularly David Warner settled into a brilliant rhythm.

Once again, the latter was the aggressor, as he sought to bat on the front foot and put the Mumbai bowlers under pressure. In a 33-ball 48, Warner struck eight boundaries in total leaving his side well placed on 85 for one once he departed in the 10th over off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh.
HoldingWilleyCricket had high praise for the Aussie and the way he plays the 20-over game:
"Warner is the modified version of Sehwag having consistency in batting, fielding & running.#IPL #MIvSRH

Harbhajan struck in his next over to get rid of Kane Williamson, and there was a small sense momentum was beginning to turn back towards the Indians. But the arrival of Yuvraj Singh alongside the anchoring Dhawan breathed life back into the Hyderabad effort.
We’ve yet to see the best of Yuvraj in this tournament, but he clicked into gear late on here with some mammoth hitting, including three fours and two sixes during his 23-ball 39.

Alongside him Dhawan, who was superb in the previous game against Gujarat, began to up the ante, freeing his arms and beginning to find the boundaries. Yuvraj eventually departed with a couple of balls left in the innings, but his compatriot remained, finishing up unbeaten with 82 from 57 balls.
AltCricket hailed a pretty textbook knock from the opener, as Hyderabad posted 177 for three from their 20 overs:
"First time this IPL that Shikhar Dhawan has accelerated, gone through the gears, and finished with a flourish. Huge boost for Sunrisers.
— Alt Cricket (@AltCricket) May 8, 2016"
It became apparent pretty quickly this was going to be too much for Mumbai, as the Hyderabad bowling attack, led by the veteran instincts of Nehra, tore into their batting lineup.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar had Parthiv Patel in the first over for a duck, before Nehra, with his first ball, bowled Indians skipper Rohit Sharma for just five.
Then, after trying to consolidate, the visitors suffered another collapse. In the fourth over Nehra proved too good for Ambati Rayudu (six) and Jos Buttler (2) in the space of three balls, before Barinder Sran snaffled the dangerous Krunal Pandya for 17, leaving the holders in a major rut at 30 for five.

As noted by cricket journalist Ayaz Memon, Mumbai’s ultra aggressive approach was leaving them a little embarrassed against Nehra et al:
The rest of the match had a processional feel about it. Mustafizur Rahman was introduced into the bowling attack to take the wickets of Hardik Pandya (7) and Tim Southee (3), with Mumbai merely playing for pride at this point. Eventually they collapsed to 92 all out off just 16.3 overs, with Rahman taking three wickets.
The Sunrisers are the best team in the IPL at the moment, with six wins in their last seven. Previously criticised for being too reliant on Warner, they now have Dhawan in fine form, as well as able supporting acts in Williamson and Yuvraj. With the ball, Nehra continues to be a major threat in this format of the game despite his advancing years.
After winning three in a row coming into this one, Mumbai will be desperately disappointed with how they wilted under the pressure of a big target. It’s imperative we see more backbone from this group if they’re to defend their crown.
