Kentucky Derby 2016: Video Highlights, Payouts and Churchill Downs Results

Tyler ConwayMay 7, 2016

For the fourth time in as many years, the Kentucky Derby has gone to the favorite. Nyquist continued his historic unbeaten run Saturday, holding off Exaggerator to win the 142nd Run for the Roses.

The Doug O'Neill-trained colt finished in 2:01.31, which is nearly two full seconds better than American Pharoah's time a year ago. He was 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Exaggerator, who got caught in traffic before making a strong late run. The duo wound up in a race of their own, as third-place Gun Runner was 4 ½ lengths behind as part of a photo finish with Mohaymen and Suddenbreakingnews.

Nyquist has won eight straight races to start his career. He's the first undefeated horse to win the Derby since Big Brown in 2008 and the eighth overall. His win marks the first time in more than 40 years four straight favorites have won at Churchill Downs.

Recap

As always, the key here was the start. Nyquist avoided getting clumped into the pack of horses that were converging inside, getting out of the gate strong to put himself in position for a run. He hung around in second and third for the first three-quarters of a mile before kicking it into high gear. Working a bit on the outside groove, Nyquist passed a fading Danzing Candy and pulled ahead of Gun Runner coming out of the final turn.

"His run was awesome," owner J. Paul Reddam said, per ESPN.com. "Obviously, we were going to take it to 'em. I love the way that we fired out of there, and he sat behind Danzing Candy. This horse, he's really something. We're just really lucky to be a part of that."

Nyquist appeared to be on his way to a huge gap as he pulled away down the final straight stretch, but Exaggerator flew up the pack. Exaggerator, who won the Santa Anita Derby by 6 ¼ lengths, seemed to have the most in the tank for the final run. He blasted his way out of the muck of horses in the middle of the field and may have won if the race had continued for another 10 seconds.

"I didn't think Exaggerator hit the brakes as much as Kent alluded to," trainer Keith Desormeaux said, per John Cherwa of the Los Angeles Times. "I thought we had time to catch Nyquist. He had clear running room from the entire one-quarter-mile stretch. I thought for sure we would catch him. He did kind of level off the last 16th of a mile."

Danzing Candy wound up fading all the way back to 15th place, and only six horses trailed by fewer than 10 lengths. It was another brilliant performance in a career full of them for Nyquist, who will now attempt to become the second undefeated Derby winner in history to win the Triple Crown.

The first? Secretariat. So, yeah. He's seeking to keep lofty company right now.

If you were looking to win it big, this wasn't the Derby for you. Nyquist entered as a 2-1 favorite, and Exaggerator was the race's second favorite. At 10-1, Gun Runner wound up being the third favorite as well.

In essence: If you picked an all-chalk race, you walked away happy. You were not necessarily rich since none of them had better than 10-1 odds, but you were still reasonably happy.

Either everyone is getting better at this whole handicapping thing, or we're in the midst of an unprecedented streak of good guesses. Maybe the Preakness on May 21 will offer a better idea.
