Kevin Durant Comments on Spurs' Depth, David West Taking Pay Cut to Sign, More
With the Oklahoma City Thunder trailing the San Antonio Spurs 2-1 in the Western Conference Semifinals following Friday's 100-96 loss, OKC star Kevin Durant had plenty to say about the Spurs Saturday.
According to Anthony Slater of the Oklahoman, KD praised San Antonio's depth and expressed his admiration for the fact that David West was willing to take a pay cut and lesser role in order to chase a championship:
Durant's comments came after ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported Friday that the Spurs have interest in pursuing the former scoring champion in free agency this offseason.
Signing Durant would likely require some significant maneuvering on San Antonio's part since LaMarcus Aldridge, Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and Danny Green are all set to make at least $10 million next season, per Spotrac.com.
West made just south of $1.5 million this season, and while it seems highly unlikely that Durant will sign for anything close to that figure, his stated desire to be a champion could draw him to the Spurs if they are able to create enough cap space.
The 27-year-old superstar has essentially done it all in the NBA with seven All-Star appearances and a Rookie of the Year award to his credit, but Durant's inability to win a championship thus far has defined him in many ways.
San Antonio may already be the team to beat this year depending upon Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry's health, and it would become an even bigger threat to the Dubs next year with Durant on board.
All of the NBA's 30 teams would likely leap at the chance to sign Durant if possible, but if winning a title is his sole focus, then it is easy to envision the Spurs being his primary choice.
