As the odds suggest, Nyquist is the heavy favorite at this year's Kentucky Derby. Undefeated in seven races, Nyquist's key feature—his excellent tactical speed and versatility—should serve him well at the often unpredictable and crowded Derby.
Nyquist didn't get a terribly unfavorable draw at No. 13, though the sprinters are largely crowded on the outside.
Few horses got a tougher break than Mor Spirit, who drew the No. 17 post. No horse has ever won the Derby from No. 17. His trainer, Bob Baffert, was less than pleased with the draw.
"The last time I had the 17 post was Point Given with Gary Stevens [fifth in 2001], and here we are again," Baffert told the Associated Press (via ESPN). "I wanted the 16. All the speed is on the outside, so there will probably be two different races going on."
Brody's Cause could also be adversely affected by a difficult draw at post No. 19, especially with all of the early speed out wide.
Meanwhile, there is little speed on the inside, which bodes extremely well for Gun Runner, one of three horses coming in at 10-1 odds. Like Nyquist, Gun Runner has tactical speed, and without any sprinters in his vicinity to trap him, he should be able to break early and have a clean run around the first turn.
Creator, the Arkansas Derby winner, will also benefit from his draw, as he'll settle near the rail, allow the pack to pass him by and bide his time for a big late push. The possibility of a clean run behind Gun Runner is a positive for Creator.
Mohaymen, meanwhile, is a bit of a wild card. The horse has obvious talent, but he came up short in the Florida Derby, falling to fourth after dying off down the stretch. If that race was an aberration and not a sign of things to come, Mohaymen is a serious contender.
Ditto for Exaggerator, who still hasn't beaten Nyquist but won the Santa Anita Derby by adjusting his style, as Jonathan Lintner of the Journal-Courier noted:
"Since suffering a third defeat to Nyquist in the San Vicente, Exaggerator has changed his running style to one suited for the Derby. He now sits off the pace, in the middle of the pack, and makes a major middle move. It worked to the tune of a 6 ¼-length victory last time out in the Santa Anita Derby, one of the most visually impressive performances by a 3-year-old.
"
The draw wasn't particularly unfavorable to Exaggerator, and the horse heads into the Derby with the race's second-best odds, behind only Nyquist.
So it's a crowded field of contenders behind Nyquist. But there's little doubt that Doug O'Neill's horse is the heavy favorite.
