Royal Challengers Bangalore sealed their second win in the 2016 Indian Premier League Twenty20 on Thursday with a 13-run victory over Rising Pune Supergiants.
AB de Villiers clocked 83 runs off 46 balls alongside Virat Kohli’s 80-run contribution to end their inning 185 for three before Thisara Perera took three wickets for 34 to prevent a Supergiants comeback.
Ajinkya Rahane made 60 runs off 46 balls but was the only Rising Pune batsman to surpass the half-century mark, as they finished on 172 for eight. Kevin Pietersen hobbled off with a back complaint after just 1.5 overs as the Supergiants fell to their third loss of the campaign.

Supergiants vs. Royal Challengers
Bangalore 185 for three (AB de Villiers 83, Perera 3-34) beat Supergiants 172 for eight (Rahane 60, Richardson 3-13) by 13 runs
AB de Villiers’s 83 hit inspired the Royal Challengers to a short runs victory over the Supergiants in Match 16 of this year’s tournament, snapping their two-game losing streak.
Prior to this match, 14 of the 15 games had been won by the chasing side, and with that notion in mind, the Supergiants elected to bowl first at Nehru Stadium after winning the toss.
Virat Kohli and Lokesh Rahul were put into bat first and made 27 by the middle of the third over before Rahul was caught out.
Thisara Perera’s accurate delivery teased Rahul just outside the off stump as the Bangalore batman got right under the ball to enable Ishant Sharma to claim from the skies easily.
However, following the arrival of de Villiers, the Supergiants’ afternoon took a turn for the worse with the South African batsman producing a sterling performance at the crease to lead his side to victory.
Cricket statistician Mohandas Menon detailed the significance of the duo's combined hit:
Bangalore raced to 50 runs in 6.3 overs before continuing their dominance throughout, with de Villiers and Kohli combining for their third 100-plus stand from their opening four matches of the competition.
The 32-year-old de Villiers superbly struck six fours and four sixes as he fronted the attack with a series of big hits and reverse sweeps in a complete display from the accomplished right-hander.
Kohli’s 80 runs see him claim the Orange Cap for becoming the leading scorer of this year’s IPL on 267 runs, but his batting partner is just 18 runs behind on 249.

The Indian international was the first of the two serious run scorers to be displaced in the final over after being caught out attempting a big hit, as he could only find the hands of Ajinkya Rahane at deep midwicket.
However, it didn’t take long for de Villiers to join him in the pavilion, as he was sent packing after a rare mishit. Poor contact attempting to strike to long-on enabled Ankit Sharma to pluck the ball from the air, but it had little impact on the eventual outcome.
The hosts were soon put into back facing a stiff total and got off to a terrible innings start with captain MS Dhoni walking out to bat before the third over had gotten underway.
Cricket commentator Ayaz Memon questioned whether Dhoni could have been more aggressive from the start:
Francois du Plessis was removed by the fourth ball of the second over before Pietersen was forced off with a serious-looking back injury. To make matters worse, Steve Smith was then run out by Kohli at backwards point to leave the Supergiants in disarray inside the opening periods.
The removal of the three overseas batsmen meant Rahane and Dhoni were forced to play with caution in order to prevent a complete collapse within the early stages but kept the scoreboard ticking over with a 91-run stand.

Rahane was eventually stumped by Tabraiz Shamsi with the hosts needing 70 runs to win with five over to play. However, following Dhoni’s 16th over exit, hopes of a reprieve were all but over.
Supergiants entered the final over with 21 runs needed, but bowler Kane Richardson avoided a meltdown to offer up just seven runs as Bangalore recorded another triumph in this year’s competition in spite of batting first.
Per ESPNcricinfo, Man of the Match de Villiers was pleased to get over the line but admitted it wasn't as easy as it may have appeared, as he said:
"It wasn't easy to get going. I maybe got away with a couple of easy boundaries. Both my sweeps didn't come off the middle, but went for six. But generally, I'm pleased with my performance. Their batting line-up was all class. Dhoni and Rahane took it deep, and we knew Thisara would keep us on our toes. He was striking it well. Happy that we crossed the line though.
"
Up next for Bangalore is a clash with Gujarat Lions on April 24 in Match 19, while the Supergiants face current competition leaders Kolkata Knight Riders the following day in Pune.
