Mark Webb to Georgia: Bulldogs Land 4-Star WR Prospect
Wide receiver Mark Webb took himself off the recruiting market Friday, as the Archbishop Wood High School product committed to Georgia.
Radi Nabulsi of WXIA-11Alive tweeted Webb's announcement:
Webb rates as a 4-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and he is ranked as the No. 19 wide receiver, No. 5 player from the state of Pennsylvania and No. 134 recruit in the class of 2017 overall.
The Warminster, Pennsylvania, native garnered interest from high-profile programs throughout the country. That included Penn State in his own backyard, along with the likes of North Carolina and Rutgers, among others, per 247Sports.
Despite Penn State's close proximity, Webb's final decision came down to Georgia and Alabama with his father explaining what the separating factor was, via Rob DiRienzo of Fox 29 in Philadelphia:
Webb's affinity for a high-volume passing game is interesting since he has made the most of limited opportunities during his high school career.
After being used somewhat sparingly as a freshman and sophomore, Webb broke out during his junior season to the tune of 15 receptions for 510 yards and nine touchdowns, giving him a ridiculous 34 yards-per-catch average, per MaxPreps.com.
At 6'2" and 199 pounds to go along with impressive speed and leaping ability, Webb is a true deep threat capable of outdueling cornerbacks and winning 50-50 balls on a regular basis.
He is the type of pass-catcher quarterbacks love due to his ability to bail them out, and that could make him a favorite target at Georgia, which is breaking in highly regarded true freshman quarterback Jacob Eason this season.
As talented as Webb is, though, it may not be realistic to expect him to blossom into a star immediately due to the fact that his usage has been somewhat conservative in high school.
Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart comes from a defensive background, but he is also from the Nick Saban coaching tree after working at Alabama from 2008 to 2015. He understands the value of having impact talent and depth on both sides of the ball.
Georgia has sky-high expectations every year, which is why Mark Richt lost his job despite winning at least nine games 11 times in 15 seasons. Smart is not shying away from what it takes to be considered a success with the Bulldogs and compete for SEC championships ever year.
Webb's commitment gives Smart another talented young weapon to build his offense around, especially since Eason will likely be ready for big things by the time Webb is ready for prime time.
A year of development collegiately could work wonders for Webb and set the stage for him to become one of the conference's most dangerous receivers.
