Liverpool vs. Everton: Score, Reaction from 2016 Premier League Match

Christopher SimpsonApr 20, 2016

Liverpool bagged a 4-0 win in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Wednesday, extending 10-man Everton's winless streak in the Premier League to seven matches.

Goals in quick succession from Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho gave the hosts a comfortable lead right at the end of the first half, while Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho netted in the second half.

Ramiro Funes Mori saw red for the Toffees early in the second half for a poor challenge on Origi that forced the Belgian to leave the field on a stretcher.

The first chance of the contest fell to Adam Lallana six minutes in, but the England international wasted the opportunity to give Liverpool an early lead when he fired straight at Joel Robles after Coutinho played him in.

At the other end, the Toffees appeared somewhat disjointed, as Romelu Lukaku was left isolated in attack, not helped by some excellent defending from Sakho every time the Belgian was able to get on the ball.

The Reds created another two chances, with Lucas Leiva's long-range effort forcing a stop from Robles before Lallana headed narrowly wide, and the Everton goalkeeper was required again on the half-hour mark to deny Roberto Firmino in a one-on-one as Liverpool turned the screw.

They took a deserved lead two minutes before the break through Origi, who rose above John Stones to head home James Milner's cross, his fifth goal in five games. Milner was provider yet again in injury time, this time with Sakho powering in a header of his own, per Sky Sports Statto:

Bleacher Report UK's Jack Lusby hailed the defender's performance:

Meanwhile, Squawka Football revealed the extent of Milner's impressive form:

Everton's evening got worse soon after the restart, as they were reduced to 10 men. Funes Mori was the man to be dismissed, after he caught Origi on the ankle with a poor tackle, per Sky Sports:

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty and BT Sport's Lynsey Hipgrave were not impressed:

Sturridge came close to scoring shortly before the hour mark, when he raked a dipping effort toward goal only for Robles to make it across in time to cover it, but soon after that, the Englishman found the net with a neat finish.

Lucas sent an excellent through ball forward, and after timing his run magnificently, Sturridge controlled the ball and finished past Robles from 10 yards out.

The Reds continued to dominate the match against their hapless visitors and forced Robles into further saves, with Alberto Moreno testing him from distance.

Coutinho rounded out the scoring on 76 minutes, picking the ball up on the edge of the area and curling a low, hard shot into the bottom corner.

Liverpool finished the game strongly as they sought a fifth but were unable to find the net once more.

Jurgen Klopp's side are ending the season with some style and could well continue their good form at home to Newcastle United on Saturday, even with the Magpies enjoying something of a late resurgence in their bid for survival.

As for Everton, their misery has shown little sign of ending—in the Premier League at least. They'll need to put this result and performance out of mind when they take on Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.

Post-Match Reaction

Klopp gave his take on the match, per the Liverpool Echo:

He also gave an update on Origi's condition, according to journalist Kristof Terreur:

Meanwhile, Everton manager Roberto Martinez was highly critical of his side's performance, according to the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan:

"

It was a disaster. A horrible showing that started with the best intentions but ended up with the inability to get the basics right. We forgot to defend the box and gave them a soft two-goal lead.

We got emotional with the red card and from then on Gareth Barry was injured and John Stones was ill, it was a chain reaction. A disaster. An impossible experience.

"

On the red card, he said: "It is a challenge [Funes Mori] that he should avoid. He got carried away with the emotion of a derby, he got carried away. Probably a red card, I can understand it or maybe a yellow."
