Joe Gibbs Racing continued its domination at short tracks, especially at Bristol, as a driver from the team won the pole for the sixth time in the last seven races.
That's not all, as USA Today's Jeff Gluck pointed out:
At Bristol Motor Speedway, concrete corners gave drivers a conundrum Friday.
Following Xfinity Series practice, plenty of rubber remained on the track. With the lower portions of the track black, Sprint Cup drivers could try to test their luck by going higher on the track and picking up more speed, or they could stay down low and try using the best route possible.
Edwards, who won the pole at Texas Motor Speedway last week, and runner-up Joey Logano traded places in the first round Friday.
Penske Racing's Logano finished ahead of Edwards and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch.
Ty Dillon had to scramble to get a qualifying lap in, as he had difficulties dealing with the rubber-filled track down low. He made contact with the apron before spinning out and skidding into the right rear of Landon Cassill.
Fox Sports 1 showed Dillon's issues:
Dillon and Cassill were able to make repairs to their cars, but both were cut after the first round.
With Edwards in second place in the second round of qualifying, Logano again squeaked in front of him, taking the No. 2 spot behind only Busch.
If history suggested anything, it was imperative for drivers to make it past the second round. Each of the past 10 race winners at Bristol started from a top-12 position.
That should make AJ Allmendinger feel better about his clinching of the final spot in the second round after Jamie McMurray, the last driver of the round, finished just one-thousandth of a second behind him.
Allmendinger will start Sunday's race in ninth place.
In the third round, though, Edwards got the best of Logano after putting up a time better than 15 seconds. Logano will start third, and Kenseth will be in second.
With a few laps under their belts, drivers will know how to approach the 500 laps at Bristol in terms of tire usage. With that amount of racing, there is going to be a lot of rubber on the track Sunday, so the Food City 500 will be a constant search for clean lanes.
