25 Recent Sports Uniforms We Don't Ever Need to See Again
Fashion tends to be in the eye of the beholder. All right, that's not always true. Uniforms can be straight trash, and everyone with a pair of eyes understands this.
Recently, there's been an onslaught of awful, blistering uniforms to come out of the trenches and stake their claim across professional sports.
Dissecting and destroying each and every one of them since 2006, it's time to bring you 25 recent uniforms we don't ever need to see again.
Pittsburgh Steelers: 2012 Throwback
1 of 25
Incorporating throwback uniforms into sports has traditionally been a good idea. Nostalgia works. But, sometimes, it's better to stay the course rather than go back in time.
The Pittsburgh Steelers honored their heritage when they broke out this pinstriped alternate in 2012.
Visually, it has to be one of the worst NFL jerseys to date. It also proves that some eras in fashion—particularly the 1930s—are better left in the past.
Atlanta Thrashers: 2007 Home Alternate
2 of 25
The now-defunct Atlanta Thrashers were blessed with an unusual set of uniforms. Despite most choices being easy on the eyes, the team's home alternate—worn until 2007—was dreadful.
Something about the power-blue base blended with a dark-blue trim didn't translate well. The uniform turned out to be a dull representation of an exciting franchise.
Now labeled the Winnipeg Jets, there's a good chance 2007 marks the last time we'll ever see these alternate uniforms on the ice.
New Orleans Hornets: 2012 Away Alternate
3 of 25
Way back when they were situated in New Orleans, the Hornets—now Pelicans—experimented by instilling the city's lively culture into their uniforms.
A few choices worked, while others should have been trashed from the get-go. This yellow, turquoise and purple alternate was the worst offender.
Thankfully, the city has embraced the Pelicans' way of doing business, and these uniforms are currently buried in what I perceive is a vault full of terrible NBA content.
Buffalo Bills: 2010 Home
4 of 25
The Buffalo Bills' hunt for the perfect uniform hit a snag when they brought these hometown jerseys out in 2002.
It's tough to tell what's worse. The fact that these were actually allowed on a field of play or that they lasted until the 2010 season. Either way, the Bills were the first team to take a bland colorway and dumb it down even more.
These uniforms are the equivalent of CSPAN on a Friday night. Nothing good comes from watching it.
Washington Wizards: 2006 Away Alternate
5 of 25
These days, the Washington Wizards sport some of the nicest uniforms in the NBA. Back in 2006, it was a completely different story.
The Wizards' gold alternate was horrible. Instead of resembling an NBA franchise, these jerseys reminded us of a team that took 40 years' worth of losses to the Harlem Globetrotters.
Thankfully, these babies are now gone. And we can say with confidence, good riddance.
Denver Broncos: 2009 Home Throwback
6 of 25
Don't worry—you're not losing your mind. The uniform featured above this blurb of text is that of the Denver Broncos. It was a throwback effort worn in 2009.
Forget the fact that it parallels Washington's practice jersey. This uniform barely resembles the Broncos. There's no orange or blue. It's just a mashup of yellow and brown.
The Broncos haven't worn this uniform in recent times, and for that, we are thankful.
Northwestern Football: 2009 Alternate
7 of 25
Designing a jersey to honor the United States is a good idea on paper. Unfortunately for the Northwestern football program, the result didn't quite work out as planned.
In 2009, these jerseys turned out to be a complete mess. Everything from the helmet down to the shoulders was nothing but scattered stars and stripes.
Once blended together with a gray base, these American flag uniforms flatlined. They now are best served as closet-dwelling, dust-collecting garments.
Tampa Bay Rays: 2014 Away Throwback
8 of 25
The Tampa Bay Rays have been around since 1998. Because of that, their closet of throwback jerseys is limited.
So rather than bypass wearing throwbacks, the team decided it would invent some.
It hasn't worked out. Last season, the Rays wore these faux throwbacks against the Chicago Cubs. They were too bright, random and ugly to be considered anything special.
Come on, guys. It's bad enough that you made this jersey up. Couldn't you at least have produced something a little better looking?
Buffalo Bills: 2015 Away "Color Rush"
9 of 25
The NFL decided to further dilute Thursday Night Football last season with the introduction of "Color Rush" uniforms. It was a complete miscalculation that led your favorite NFL teams down a path of awful uniform choices.
Very few of these jerseys looked worse than the Buffalo Bills' all-red attire. These things were tough to stay focused on for an entire game. There was way too much going on.
The good news is the Bills haven't worn them since that Week 10 victory over the New York Jets. Let's hope that stays the case.
Charlotte Bobcats: 2006 Home Alternate
10 of 25
There's a reason why the Charlotte Bobcats became the Hornets. We'd like to think that this horrible uniform was a deciding factor when it came down to that change of heart.
Borax-like colors, Arena Football League graphics and stabs of orange created a trifecta of terribleness. The Bobcats, now gone, will forever be a team hampered by poor fashion choices.
Seattle Seahawks: 2009 Home Alternate
11 of 25
As a color, lime green never works. It's distracting, abrasive and in-your-face. But the Seattle Seahawks threw caution to the wind and went for it anyway.
The team unveiled this alternate home jersey in 2009, according to Uni-Watch.com. It was an aggressive effort that provided Seattle with a new image.
Fans haven't seen the lime-green jersey in a while, and that's something we can all be thankful for. This thing was way too much to handle on a weekly basis.
Cleveland Browns: 2015 Home Alternate
12 of 25
The Cleveland Browns had a good thing going when the team switched up its uniforms prior to the 2015 season. A new look was unveiled, giving the team a refreshed series of white-and-brown jerseys to play in.
However, it's the Browns. And that usually means something will go wrong.
Enter the orange alternates. These things were loud. Simply looking at them creates a sense of uncontrollable anxiety.
In life, there can be too much of a good thing. Orange falls in line with that way of thinking.
Albany Men's Basketball: 2014 NCAA Tournament
13 of 25
Purple and gold has consistently been a tough look to pull off in sports. The Albany men's basketball program found that out the hard way in 2014.
Instead of mixing and matching both hues in a controlled manner, the Great Danes decided it was a better idea to simply smack yellow across the back of their shorts and call it a day.
Folks, this is an example of what not to do when it comes to designing uniforms. Please, don't let this atrocity happen again.
Kansas Jayhawks Football: 2010 Home
14 of 25
For whatever reason, the Kansas Jayhawks football program thought it'd be a good idea to make sure its jerseys looked like they were from 1986.
Incorporating a fresh design? Who needs that? Kansas went through the entire 2010 campaign on a retro kick.
The only problem: These uniforms were dreadful to look at. Zero creativity was brought to the table. And when you consider the lavish history of the Jayhawks basketball team, it's even more depressing that the football program would just mail it in.
Syracuse Men's Basketball: 2014 Home Alternate
15 of 25
Syracuse has maintained itself thanks to dope uniforms over the years. Nevertheless, it isn't immune from disasters.
Let's take it back to 2014 for a second. That was the year the Orangemen swerved away from their usual garments and broke out this bold color-blocking scheme as an alternate home jersey.
Uncomfortable is the best word to use when describing these uniforms. It looked like the laundry department—probably not a real thing—forgot to wash a traditional pair of shorts and had to scramble in order to find a solution.
Whatever the case was, this uniform represented a low point for the program's otherwise fashionable endeavors.
St. Louis Rams: 2015 Home "Color Rush"
16 of 25
Another awful Color Rush uniform came when the St. Louis Rams—now situated in Los Angeles—took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Week 15 of the 2015 NFL season.
This all-gold look didn't quite make enough of a statement. Come to think of it, none of these Color Rush jerseys did.
Notre Dame Men's Basketball: 2010 "Digital Camo" Alternate
17 of 25
Part of Notre Dame's allure has been its traditional choice of uniforms. So when it broke out a digital camouflage, lime-green jersey in 2013, it felt forced.
This wasn't Notre Dame. Nothing about this uniform represented the school's ancestry. It was a random concoction of colors that didn't honor the program in any way.
There's creativity, and then there's overkill. Notre Dame enjoyed the latter.
Philadelphia Eagles: 2007 Home Throwback
18 of 25
Life was good when Andy Reid and company were running the show for the Philadelphia Eagles. Things were usually moving along smoothly—like nine playoff appearances in 14 seasons.
However, one dark cloud still hangs over Reid's tenure. Those dreadful 2007 throwback uniforms.
No Eagles player should have ever been forced to wear such heinous jerseys. They represented all sorts of awful. Powder blue laid over yellow was so anti-Philadelphia that it hurt to watch.
Forget the fact the Eagles beat the Detroit Lions, 56-21, while wearing them. These jerseys weren't worth that rampant scoring barrage.
Golden State Warriors: 2013 Home Alternate
19 of 25
The Golden State Warriors' record-breaking success is all the hype, talk and rage right now. But don't forget, before they were NBA champions, the Warriors boasted one of the nastiest uniforms we've ever laid our delicate eyes on.
This yellow alternate jersey was a total disaster. It was a bright-yellow, sleeved effort mixed with pinstriped shorts—all of which took some getting used to.
Golden State suffered a rare miss uniform-wise with these jerseys in 2013. Fortunately for all of us, it has managed to move past it.
Sacramento Kings: 2006 Home Alternate
20 of 25
Leave it to the Sacramento Kings—a team notorious for unrestrained uniforms—to experiment with gold alternates.
Using gold to stand out isn't a foreign concept. The problem is that it has to be executed the right way.
The Kings weren't able to pull it off. These jerseys look like they were destined to hit a clearance rack. From the fonts to the use of purple and white to diffuse the gold, nothing came together.
At least the Kings had enough sense not to use these things anymore.
New York Knicks: 2012 Away Christmas
21 of 25
Most of the time, the NBA's Christmas jerseys are on point. Unfortunately for the New York Knicks, they were on the receiving end of an awful selection back in 2012.
This all-orange Christmas uniform is easily the worst one we've seen to date. Like a lot of other choices on here, this is an example of too much color. It's reminiscent of the NFL Color Rush campaign.
Clearly, the Knicks are better off sporting classic jerseys.
Green Bay Packers: 2010 Home Throwback
22 of 25
What is it with so many NFL throwback jerseys being considered lame? The Green Bay Packers joined that club in 2010, when they attempted to honor the team's 1929 season.
Brown helmets and a dark-blue jersey aren't what we expect to see from the Packers. What happened to all of that green and yellow?
These jerseys didn't do the team any justice, and thankfully, Green Bay has since gotten rid of them, as Chris Chase of Sporting News mentioned last year.
Memphis Grizzlies: 2012 ABA Throwback
23 of 25
Respecting the past is important. So when the Memphis Grizzlies decided to honor their time as the Memphis Tams during the American Basketball Association days, it seemed like a good idea.
It became apparent right away that this look wouldn't hold up in today's world. Rather than honor Memphis' ABA heritage, the jerseys looked like something out of Will Ferrell's Semi-Pro flick.
The yellow tops and green shorts were too contrasting. It drew attention away from the Grizzlies on the court—and not in a good way.
We haven't seen these uniforms broken out since. Guess someone in management got the memo.
Charlotte Bobcats: 2008 Home NASCAR Alternate
24 of 25
If you thought the Charlotte Bobcats couldn't get any worse, you thought wrong. Besides being stuck with a series of terrible uniforms throughout their entire existence, the Bobcats once decided to wear NASCAR-themed jerseys.
That's not a typo. The jerseys you see above were constructed to resemble NASCAR's checkered flag in 2008.
In fairness, this night was put together with a wonderful cause in mind, as Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports explained. Be that as it may, these uniforms were all types of rotten.
Jacksonville Jaguars: 2015 Home "Color Rush"
25 of 25
How fitting is it that our list of sports uniforms we don't ever need to see again ends with another NFL Color Rush jersey?
The Jacksonville Jaguars take home the prize for worst jersey of 2015. A mustard-yellow design signifies how appalling the NFL's whole Color Rush scheme actually was.
Sorry, Jaguars. On the bright side, at least you have Allen Robinson and Blake Bortles to fall back on for years to come.
