Through nine holes Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club, No. 2-ranked Jordan Spieth looked to be cruising to his second straight Masters championship.

The 22-year-old would have been just the fourth golfer to win back-to-back Masters and the first to lead wire to wire in both of them, according to About Sports.

Instead, he imploded, shooting five over par on the back nine and finishing tied for second, three shots off the lead.

Danny Willett, a 28-year-old Englishman, was the benefactor of Spieth's meltdown, earning his first green jacket with a 67 on Sunday and final score of five under. Spieth's bogey on No. 17 sealed the victory for Willett.

Willett, the second Englishman to win the Masters, per Augusta.com, celebrated his victory in the clubhouse, via The Cauldron:

He had an interesting description of what transpired, per the PGA Tour"It really is bonkers."

However, before Willett jumped into the lead, Spieth was cruising

His fourth birdie in a row gave him a five-shot lead over Willett and seemed to all but wrap up the victory after No. 9.

Former PGA Tour caddie Michael Collins felt Spieth's lead was insurmountable at that point:

Skip Bayless of ESPN called the tournament then and there:

It was an impressive front nine for Spieth, whose four-under performance was one stroke better than his previous 63 holes.

However, it was far from over.

Spieth proceeded to bogey the next two holes, opening the door for Willett. Brian Wacker of the PGA Tour's official website summed up the turnaround:

It quickly got worse.

Spieth found the water twice on No. 12 and ended with a quadruple-bogey seven. All of a sudden, he found himself four strokes off the lead.

Will Brinson of CBS Sports summed up Spieth's back nine at that point:

For his part, Willett did not falter after shooting into the lead, finishing the day with zero bogeys and three birdies between holes Nos. 13 through 16.

ESPN.com's Jason Sobel noted some possible good karma Willett had going for him during the round:

Although Willettwhose newborn son was due Sunday, according to the CBS broadcastdeserves all the attention, an accomplishment by a trio of golfers may have trumped him, at least from an entertainment standpoint.

According to Doug Roberson of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, for the first time in Masters history, a hole saw three holes-in-one on the same day. Shane Lowry, Davis Love III and Louis Oosthuizen all aced No. 16, setting a record that may never be broken.

Oosthuizen's was the most impressive, as it hit another ball on the way to landing in the bottom of the cup, via the PGA Tour:

There had not been a hole-in-one at Augusta since 2013, and it was the most in one Masters tournament since 2004, per About Sports:

32016, 2004
22012, 2010, 1992, 1954
12013, 2008, 2005, 1996, 1988, 1972, 1968, 1959, 1949, 1947, 1940, 1935, 1934

While that was cool, it's safe to say Willett couldn't care less while he was putting on his coveted green jacket, presented by last year's winner, Spieth, of all people, via the PGA Tour:

He almost didn't play because the birth of his son, but in the end it all worked out, per Sobel"Little man was due today, but he listened to his dad," Willett said.

Spieth, on the other hand, was devastated after failing to make history, per the PGA Tour"A really tough 30 minutes for me that hopefully I never have to experience again."

It was amazing to watch a collapse by one of the best golfers in the world, who had led for seven straight rounds at Augusta. The victory by Willett proves anything can happen in the sport, and no lead is safe until everyone is in the clubhouse.
