However, Marcel van der Kraan of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf—where Van Gaal used to be a columnist—reports the 64-year-old will remain in charge for the final year of his deal with United, though NBC Sports' Joe Prince-Wright believes he could be "trying to call United’s bluff and force them into showing their hand about their plans for next season" by exploiting his links with the outlet.

Per the Sun's Toby Gannon, Mourinho is "believed to be desperate" to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Kane in a sensational £60 million deal.

The 22-year-old has been in magnificent form this season with 25 goals to his name, including 22 in the Premier League.

After bagging 21 in the league last year, his goal against Liverpool on Saturday saw him reach two impressive milestones, per the Premier League and BreatheSport:

Football Focus presenter Dan Walker revealed the extent of his clinical finishing:

ESPN's Taylor Twellman and Sam Wallace of the Telegraph also praised his predatory instinct, which was in full force as he turned his marker and fired into the bottom corner at Anfield:

Indeed, football writer Nooruddean Choudry believes there is little room for doubt that Kane is the real deal, while Yahoo Sport's Nikhil Saglani hailed his development over the last two seasons:

United have great need for a man of his talents after struggling in the final third throughout the season, with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Memphis Depay frequently underperforming.

Kane seems destined to become one of the Premier League's top strikers for years to come, so securing his signature would help the Red Devils return to the top.

The club might also attempt to bring in Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, according to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News. The Colombian is currently struggling to secure a starting berth at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this season.

Rodriguez possesses the guile and craft to add a real edge to United's play, and his ability to produce moments of magic out of nothing has hardly diminished even with overall poor form, with the 24-year-old scoring six goals and assisting eight in 23 matches this season.

He could also cost £60 million, though, so with more than one attacking player required to fire United up the table and defensive reinforcements also needed, the Red Devils may only be able to land one of him or Kane this summer.
