Top 5 Performing Quarterback Recruits from 2016 Houston Elite 11 Regional

Damon SaylesApr 4, 2016

HOUSTON — Everyone at the latest stop on the Elite 11 regional tour saw what happens when perseverance and persistence accompany hard work.

Oklahoma quarterback commit Chris Robison competed at the Elite 11 Dallas regional three weeks ago and captured MVP honors at the camp. However, an invitation to the Elite 11 finals in June in Los Angeles was not extended at that time.

Fast-forward to Sunday at Houston's Delmar-Tusa Athletic Complex. Robison not only made sure his efforts at the Houston regional matched his previous showing in Dallas, but he also made sure he left the facility with that coveted invitation to the finals this summer.

In fact, before the event started, Robison gave a simple prediction.

"It's mine," he said. "I'm going to get it."

Mission accomplished. The 4-star quarterback from Mesquite, Texas, became the latest addition to the group that will compete for a spot in the Elite 11 and an invitation to The Opening finals from July 5-10 at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.

Roughly 60 quarterbacks from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kansas, Arkansas and Tennessee competed on Sunday. Five of the quarterbacks advanced to the half-skelly showdown, the final event that helped determine a camp MVP.

Here is a look at those five quarterbacks. Brian Stumpf, president of sports at Student Sports, provided analysis on each finalist.

MVP: 4-Star QB Chris Robison

1 of 5

Hometown (school): Mesquite, Texas (John Horn HS)

Size: 6'2", 190 lbs

247Sports composite rank: No. 193 overall (No. 9 PRO)

Commitment status: Committed to Oklahoma

Sunday was a day of relief for Chris Robison, as he not only claimed MVP honors at the Elite 11 Houston regional but also earned his invitation to the Elite 11 finals. He won his second camp MVP honor after shining at the Dallas regional, though he wasn't invited to the finals at that time.

Robison displayed arm strength and a level of leadership that makes him an intriguing player to watch. He has good feet and is able to escape the pocket—qualities that go well with his throwing.

Robison committed to Oklahoma on June 26. He has additional offers from TCU, Oklahoma State, Houston, Kansas and others. Robison threw for more than 2,024 yards and 27 touchdowns with only four interceptions last season.

Stumpf's comments

"He put together another solid day. He's really progressing. We saw it last year where a couple of guys came to multiple events. They built their catalog of throws and resume. We were able to see in these two camps the physical ability he possesses and the upside and coachability he brings. If we're bringing 24 guys to the Elite 11 finals, then Chris needs to be there."

4-Star QB Sam Ehlinger

2 of 5

Hometown (school): Austin, Texas (Westlake HS)

Size: 6'1", 207 lbs

247Sports composite rank: No. 84 overall (No. 4 DUAL)

Commitment status: Committed to Texas

The University of Texas managed to keep one of the best quarterbacks in the country close to home in Sam Ehlinger. On Sunday, Ehlinger showed why he is so highly touted.

Ehlinger had a consistent day, and he showed that he could be a game manager as well as an accurate passer. He's no stranger to putting up big numbers, as he finished his junior season with 3,833 passing yards and 50 touchdowns, as well as 1,360 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns.

Ehlinger shut down his recruitment process with a commitment to Texas on July 28. He also has offers from Houston, SMU and, most recently, Florida State.

Stumpf's comments

"Sam had a good day. The coaches were working with him on some technical stuff. He's a naturally built kid who looks like a linebacker. We were just making sure he stayed flexible and relaxed when he's throwing. I love his intangibles and loved him in film and in pads when it counts under the Friday night lights. I'm looking forward to seeing how he progresses."

3-Star QB Ty Brock

3 of 5

Hometown (school): College Station, Texas (College Station HS)

Size: 6'2 ½, 178 lbs

247Sports composite rank: No. 578 overall (No. 24 PRO)

Commitment status: Uncommitted

The world loves a good comeback story, and Ty Brock may well be the subject of one. After breaking his leg in a preseason scrimmage, Brock sat out his junior season and is now looking to make a splash during his senior year.

As a sophomore, Brock threw for 528 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 169 yards. He is on the radar of a few schools so far, including his hometown team, Texas A&M.

Brock has offers from Houston, SMU and Louisiana-Monroe.

Stumpf's comments

"I think events like this are great for everybody, but they're especially great for a kid who missed his whole year with an injury. He needed to come down and put stuff down for people to remember who he is, and he did that. He should be a 10- or 12-offer guy in the next month or two. He's that good and that talented."

3-Star QB Xavier Martin

4 of 5

Hometown (school): Cibolo, Texas (Steele HS)

Size: 6'0", 171 lbs

247Sports composite rank: No. 845 overall (No. 79 ATH)

Commitment status: Committed to Texas Tech

There aren't many quarterbacks in the country who can run the 40-yard dash in less than 4.5 seconds. Xavier Martin showed on Sunday that, athletically, he's not the average quarterback. Martin ran the 40 in 4.43 seconds, and he also showed his pocket presence and poise in quarterback drills.

Martin, a Texas Tech commit since July 27, can fit in well in Kliff Kingsbury's offense because of his accuracy and his ability to extend plays. He threw for 2,048 yards and 21 touchdowns with only three interceptions as a junior. Martin also rushed for just under 700 yards and eight touchdowns.

Martin's only current offer is the one from Texas Tech, but performances like the one he had Sunday could see his stock rise over the spring and summer.

Stumpf's comments

"Xavier's got the highest rating we've had for a quarterback so far this year, and he's the first quarterback we've had in our 'Fastest Man' race. He's a guy where, when we're talking about guys for the finals, he'll be on that bubble, on that cusp. There's a lot to put on the board for him. He's coachable, he's athletic and he throws the ball well. His tape will really be looked over."

2018 QB M.J. Rivers

5 of 5

Hometown (school): Plano, Texas (Prestonwood Christian Academy)

Size: 6'3", 190 lbs

247Sports composite rank: N/A

Commitment status: Uncommitted

For someone who saw limited game time at the quarterback position last season, M.J. Rivers could still be a special signal-caller during the 2016 season.

Rivers, the son of former NFL standout Marcellus Rivers, put on a show Sunday, quietly making play after play and earning a spot in the half-skelly showdown. He saw some time at wide receiver and on the defensive side of the ball as a sophomore, but his stock at quarterback is expected to rise quickly.

Rivers' father played tight end at Oklahoma State before his seven-year stint in the NFL. The Cowboys have the 2018 prospect on their radar.

Stump's comments

"We first saw M.J. in Dallas, and he's progressed a ton. It's going to be fascinating to watch him this fall playing the position in pads. He's got a wealth of natural ability and the bloodlines with his dad being an NFL guy. For him, it'll be about getting reps. I think his upside is huge. He's going to be on a lot of people's radars the next two years."
