Spurs Set Single-Season Franchise-Wins Record: Details, Comments, Reaction

Daniel KramerApr 2, 2016

The San Antonio Spurs are in the midst of their best regular season to date, and on Saturday they announced they've set a franchise record with 64 wins.

The record-setter came via a 102-95 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday at home, where they are 39-0 this season. Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge combined for 64 points in the win.

Their undefeated performance at home this season is a league record, per ESPN Stats & Info

Yet head coach Gregg Popovich wasn’t even remotely impressed with that feat, per Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News:

Part of Popovich’s reservation is probably because he knows what lies ahead in the playoffs.

The Spurs continue to set milestones, yet they almost assuredly won’t even claim the top seed in their conference: The Warriors have a four-game cushion with six games to play.

Despite the Spurs' distinction as five-time champions and the perennial dynasty over the past two decades, they have largely been in the shadow of the record-setting Warriors this season.

The defending champions can break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ record of 72 wins with five victories in their final six games—two of which are against San Antonio.

However, Tony Parker said on his French radio show (h/t Jeff Garcia of News4SanAntonio.com) he expects Popovich will rest all of his starters in what’s widely presumed to be a Western Conference Finals preview.

Popovich has a well-chronicled reputation for keeping his team grounded and humble, which has been a huge catalyst for its consistent success.

He knows the Spurs have an incredibly daunting road ahead, as they’ll almost assuredly have to get through the Warriors and possibly the Oklahoma City Thunder just to reach the NBA Finals.

It would be a shock if he and the team celebrate Saturday's franchise-record 64th win with anything more than a mere acknowledgment.
