Corey Sanders Declares for 2016 NBA Draft: Latest Comments, Reaction
Rutgers freshman guard Corey Sanders will declare for the 2016 NBA draft but not hire an agent, per Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press, citing a since-deleted post on Sanders' Twitter account Thursday.
In his lone season at Rutgers, Sanders led the team with 15.9 points and 4.3 assists per game. He led all freshmen in the Big Ten in scoring, was second in assists and also led the conference in steals with 1.8 per game.
Yet he lost out on conference Freshman of the Year honors to Wisconsin's Ethan Happ and wasn't on the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team, per the Big Ten Network:
That could have been a result of running into trouble off the court. In February, he was suspended for two weeks, which amounted to four games, for violating team rules.
Off-court issues aside, Sanders showed he is an aggressive, high-volume shooter, as he averaged almost 14 shots from the field per game. At 6'2", he can spot up from distance or drive to the hoop, which makes him a target defenses have to keep an eye on at all times.
DraftExpress ranked Sanders as the 73rd-best freshman player in the nation, but he was not in its top 100 overall, which would make him an unlikely candidate to be drafted.
For a player who has shown flashes of being a star in the Big Ten, going through the process could help Sanders. He'll be given a firsthand look as to what is needed to make the pros, and by not hiring an agent, he has an opportunity to return to school.
