Gianni VerschuerenMar 31, 2016

West Indies completed a remarkable comeback to beat India during Thursday's ICC World Twenty20 semi-final, chasing down a target of 193 to win by seven wickets (with two balls remaining).

Virat Kohli was once again fantastic for tournament hosts India with an unbeaten 89 runs from 47 balls, as the Men in Blue raced out to a total of 192. Chris Gayle fell early in the chase, but the West Indies rallied through Lendl Simmons, who finished with an unbeaten 82 from 51.

West Indies will meet England in the ICC World T20 final on Sunday.

India vs. West Indies

West Indies, 196-3 (Simmons 82, Badree 1-26) beat India, 192-2 (Kohli 89, Nehra 1-24) by 7 wickets (with 2 balls remaining).

The Windies won the toss and elected to field, while India sent out Ajinkya Rahane to open alongside Rohit Sharma, who was playing at his home ground.

Author Sir Sri Jhunjhunwala thought the pressure was on the two:

Sharma (43 from 31 balls) found a nice rhythm early, taking plenty of risks before his knock ended in the eighth over, when Samuel Badree hit the back pad. He made way for the in-form Kohli, who has looked nothing short of sensational throughout the tournament.

The 27-year-old and Rahane (40 from 35) pushed India's run rate up significantly during the middle overs, and they were helped by defensive struggles from the West Indies. The Windies dropped several key catches and came close to running out Kohli on back-to-back deliveries in the ninth.

Kohli made a huge error on the first ball, attempting to steal a run after a fine delivery from Dwayne Bravo, but fortunately for the Men in Blue, the throw missed the stumps by inches.

India's star batsman survived, and it would play a huge part in the rest of the innings, as he would go on for an unbeaten 89 from 47 balls, including 11 fours, per Bleacher Report UK:

Cricket writer Harsha Bhogle was amazed with some of the shots he played:

MS Dhoni (15 from nine) paired with Kohli for the final overs after Rahane was caught by Bravo, and his quick 15 led to a total of 192. Badree led West Indies' bowlers with figures of one for 26 off his four overs.

Politician Sushil Kumar Modi was sure India would make the final with such a total:

Openers Johnson Charles and Gayle knew they had a mountain to climb, and India's bowlers aggressively chased wickets in the early overs. It yielded results almost immediately, as Gayle was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah in the second over, finishing with just five runs from six balls.

Sports writer Ayaz Memon loved the fact Dhoni took a risk using Bumrah against the powerful Gayle this early in the match:

Marlon Samuels (eight from seven) was caught by Rahane in the next over, as the West Indies' chase quickly fell apart.

With 84 runs after 10 overs, the Windies were well behind the required run rate at the midway stage of their innings, but given the depth of their lineup, there was still hope for an improbable comeback. Charles (52 from 36) and Simmons (82 from 51) both contributed half-centuries to keep their team in the match.

Meanwhile, Kohli continued his heroics, this time with the ball, as he held the Windies to their first over without a boundary in the 14th.

BreatheSport joined in on the fun:

But the Windies' resurgence continued. Led by Simmons, their chase gathered steam in the final overs, and with 42 needed off 24 balls, they still had a chance. Simmons and Andre Russell kept their run rate right on the edge of what was required, and with one over left to play, the West Indies were just eight runs shy of their target.

Kohli took the ball for the final over and gave up a huge six to Russell that pulled the West Indies past their target, booking their spot in the final.

TV personality Piers Morgan loved how the West Indies finished their chase:

Per ESPN Cricinfo, Simmons said he always thought the target was a realistic one:

"

I slept the whole flight, I had got a call after the Afghanistan game and they asked if I was fit to play, I said yeah ... I played for Mumbai, I enjoy this pitch. I think it was one of my better innings ... I got the opportunity to prove myself to my fans ... Playing on this pitch I know 180-190 was a par score ... the guys said they were ten runs short, I believed that ... I got three chances, two no-balls and a six went my way and I cashed in.

"

West Indies batsmen came through in a big way after Gayle's early wicket, showing the incredible depth that makes the team so dangerous. Bowling remains a question mark entering the final against England, but with the likes of Gayle, Simmons and Russell, West Indies will always like their chances.

Few will have expected either team to make the final of this year's tournament, but there's no denying both England and West Indies have impressed and fully deserve their spot. England's bowlers looked fantastic against the Black Caps' vaunted lineup, but in the West Indies and their classic power hitting, they'll face yet another difficult challenge.
