Romania vs. Spain: Winners and Losers from International Friendly

Rob LancasterMar 27, 2016

Romania stretched their unbeaten run to 17 games by holding European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in an international friendly on Sunday

The game at the Cluj Arena in Romania saw both teams struggle to create chances, and Spain were denied a second-half penalty when substitute Cesc Fabregas appeared to be tripped inside the area.

The result means Spain have now failed to win in six visits to Romania, per statistician MisterChip on Twitter.

Visiting manager Vicente del Bosque picked a team showing 10 changes from the XI that started the 1-1 draw with Italy on Thursday.

Romania had 19 attempts at goal but only managed to get two on target, according to WhoScored.com.

Bleacher Report has picked out the winners and losers from a game that promised much but delivered little.

Winner: Iker Casillas

In winning his 166th cap for Spain, Iker Casillas equalled the record for the most international appearances by a European player, drawing level with Latvia midfielder Vitalijs Astafjevs.

The veteran goalkeeper marked the milestone by keeping an eighth successive clean sheet on duty for Spain.

Per Opta Jose, it is now 710 minutes since he last conceded a goal playing for his country.

He was forced to make a smart save low to his right in the first half, but he enjoyed a relatively easy night between the posts.

After Manchester United's David De Gea impressed in the draw with Italy, Casillas reminded his international manager that he's still going strong at the age of 34.

Loser: Paco Alcacer

Paco Alcacer was Spain's leading scorer in their UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, scoring five goals to help his country top Group C.

However, the Valencia forward struggled to make an impact against a tight Romania defence.

He failed to have a shot at goal during his 59 minutes on the field, according to WhoScored.com's statistics.

So could Alcacer be under pressure for his place ahead of the summer?

Aritz Aduriz scored for Spain in the 1-1 draw with Italy—the 35-year-old has also been prolific for Athletic Bilbao this season with 31 goals in 45 appearances, per Soccerbase.com.

Diego Costa could also come back into the reckoning. The Chelsea forward was not in the squad for the two friendlies in March, yet he could still be in the final squad for the European Championship.

Winner: Sergi Roberto

Spain are fortunate to have so many talented midfielders to choose from.

Manager Del Bosque faces a tough choice over who makes the squad for Euro 2016, but it is the kind of selection headache a manager welcomes.

Sergi Roberto is perhaps an outsider to make the final cut, yet the Barcelona player boosted his hopes with an assured display on his international debut in Cluj.

He played 60 minutes of the match before Fabregas replaced him.

But according to OptaJose on Twitter, Roberto attempted 58 passes during his time on the field, 21 more than any Romanian player.

Loser: Vicente del Bosque

Vicente del Bosque saw his Spain team draw for a second successive outing.

Del Bosque was not a happy manager after seeing Spain draw a blank away in Romania.

Per FourFourTwo, he said in his post-match press conference: "We lacked everything, in all areas. I tried to win the game by making changes, but it did not change anything."

The 0-0 result in Cluj, coming so soon after the draw against Italy, hardly helps clear up some selection issues facing the experienced coach.

Del Bosque has plenty to ponder before his team's next friendly, against Bosnia-Herzegovina on May 29.

Goals seem to be the biggest issue ahead of a major tournament—Spain have scored just four in their last four outings, although they have not been beaten during that time.

Romania kept the European champions at bay in Cluj.

Romania showed just why they have not been beaten since a 2-1 loss to Algeria in June 2014.

Anghel Iordanescu's side conceded just two goals in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. On such sound foundations, they finished second in Group F.

They have been drawn in Group A for the tournament, alongside Albania, hosts France and Switzerland. If they remain tight at the back, there is a real possibility of reaching the knockout stages.

In Nicolae Claudiu Stanciu, they also have a player capable of causing opposing teams problems.

He followed up a goalscoring debut against Lithuania on Wednesday with an impressive display against Spain, although the FC Steaua Bucuresti player was unable to make it two in two despite having six shots, per WhoScored.com on Twitter.
