Picabo Street to Have Domestic Violence Charge Dismissed
Prosecutors in the state of Utah filed a motion Thursday to dismiss misdemeanor domestic abuse and assault charges against Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, according to ABC News' Jim Vojtech and Lesley Messer.
The charges, which stemmed from an alleged incident with her 76-year-old father, are expected to be dropped in the "coming days," according to Street's attorney, Joe Wrona.
In a statement provided to ABC News, Street explained her side of the story:
"When I called the police for help with my Dad last December, I expected the police to be my knights in shining armor. Instead, they came into my house, arrested me, and put me in handcuffs when I did nothing wrong. The next thing I knew, an embarrassing photograph of me that had been taken at the local jail was circulating on the Internet. That’s no way to treat a nice girl!
Thank goodness I was able to find Joe Wrona to defend me. From the day he got involved, Joe made me feel like a champion again. I couldn’t have asked for a better lawyer.
"
According to KSL.com's Ben Lockhart, prosecutors in Utah moved to dismiss the charges, "saying the case would be handled better in a 'civil or administrative' court."
"Since filing charges, the state has become aware of additional witness statements," the filed motion read, according to Lockhart. "Based on those statements, the state believes that this case would be more appropriately handled in a civil or administrative forum by Utah's Adult and Aging Services Division."
In January, Street, 44, was formally charged with assault and three counts of domestic violence for allegedly pushing her father down two flights of stairs in her Park City, Utah, home.
"He [Picabo's father] said his daughter grabbed him by the shoulder and neck area and pushed him down two flights of stairs while his three young grandchildren looked on," the New York Daily News' Denis Slattery reported.
"According to a recorded 911 call, she told police she 'put' her father down the stairs after he attacked her, scratching her face and pulling her hair," Lockhart added.
Street was offered a plea deal, but the famed skier reportedly rejected the offer in February.
