Mike Krzyzewski Comments on Dillon Brooks Exchange After Game-Ending 3-Pointer

Tim DanielsMar 25, 2016

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski denied discussing sportsmanship with Oregon forward Dillon Brooks, who knocked down a deep three late in Thursday night's game after the outcome of the Sweet 16 matchup had already been decided.

Myron Medcalf of ESPN.com noted Friday that Brooks said Coach K told him he's "too good of a player to be showing off at the end" during the postgame handshake line. The longtime Duke coach provided a different version of their discussion.

"I didn't say that," Krzyzewski said. "You can say whatever you want. Dillon Brooks is a hell of a player. I said, 'You're a terrific player.' And you can take whatever he said and then go with it, all right?"

Here's a look at the exchange in question:

Rob Dauster of College Basketball Talk also provided a video on Saturday with enhanced audio showing Krzyzewski telling Brooks he's "too good of a player" to take that shot.

Coach K said he apologized to Oregon head coach Dana Altman Saturday, per Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News:

"

Today, I spoke with Oregon head coach Dana Altman and apologized to him for my remarks to Dillon Brooks following our game. It is not my place to talk to another team's player and doing so took the focus away from the terrific game that Dillon played.

In the postgame press conference, I reacted incorrectly to a reporter's question about my comment to Dillon. Clearly, the story that night was about Oregon advancing to the Elite Eight, and the outstanding game they played. I sincerely hope I did not create a distraction for Coach Altman and his team at this critical time of year. Certainly, I have the utmost respect for the Oregon program and their tremendous accomplishments.

"

The Ducks were up 11 with less than 30 seconds to go when Krzyzewski decided to stop fouling, conceding the contest to the West Region's top seed. Brooks opted to throw up a long-range effort as the shot clock ticked down in the final seconds, and it connected to make the final score 82-68.

While the video certainly appears to show Brooks apologizing for the shot, it's unclear whether Krzyzewski's comments prompted the response.

Just before the meeting with Coach K at half court, Duke guard Grayson Allen refused to acknowledge Brooks following the final buzzer. Sam Vecenie of CBS Sports explained that moment:

The sophomore forward finished the game with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds to help lead the Ducks into the Elite Eight. The emotion of picking up such a high-profile victory and moving within three wins of the title might have gotten the better of him late in the game, though.

That said, Oregon has bigger things to worry about right now. Brooks and Co. must start preparing for Oklahoma in the next round after the Sooners blew out Texas A&M on Thursday night.

Letting the Krzyzewski situation become a distraction, regardless of whatever he said during the brief discussion, would be a mistake.
