Gerard Pique and Neymar Reportedly Top Barcelona Fines List for Being Late

Tom SunderlandMar 24, 2016

Barcelona are ahead of schedule in this season's Primera Division title race, but Gerard Pique and Neymar have been revealed as the tardiest Camp Nou stars after the squad's "fines list" was leaked.

Javier Miguel of Spanish newspaper Sport revealed Pique to be the biggest culprit for turning up late for training and matches, accruing fines of €6,200 (£4,900), while Neymar is a distant second, having paid out €1,200 (£950). 101 Great Goals provided a glimpse of the "rankings:"

It's revealed in the report that players are fined €200 (£159) the first time they turn up late for training. The figure multiplies by two each time they repeat the offence after that.

Turning up late for a match is considered a much more serious crime, however, and first-time offenders must fork out €400 (£319), which is multiplied by four for those rebellious enough to repeat offend.

Gerard Pique€6,200 (£4,900)
Neymar€1,200 (£950)
Adriano€1,000 (£790)
Arda Turan€600 (£475)

Jack Bezants of MailOnline referred to Barca manager Luis Enrique as a "strict disciplinarian and timekeeper," but his methods appear to work if his Barca reign thus far is anything to go by.

Miguel also highlighted the idea to donate the "fines bank" to charity was initiated by former manager Pep Guardiola in around 2010. Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Andres Iniesta, Javier Mascherano and Dani Alves are reportedly all model pupils and haven't been late once.

According to the report, players are considered late if they turn up a minute late for training or a match. If a fixture is at 8:30 p.m., players are expected at the Camp Nou by 7 p.m. For training, they're expected to arrive at least an hour early.

Pique has a certain responsibility to the squad as one of its senior members, yet punctuality doesn't appear to be a priority for the centre-back, who has racked up around five times more in fines than runner-up Neymar.

Neymar could do with keeping overheads to a minimum too. Newspaper Folha de S. Paulo recently reported the Selecao star was fined €45.9 million (£36.4 million) after being found guilty of tax fraud in Brazil (h/t ESPN FC). That doesn't appear to be affecting his on-pitch performance, as shared by former England captain Rio Ferdinand:

Arda Turan has accrued €600 (£475) of fines, equal to one late appearance for training and one late showing for a match.

According to Miguel, the fines bank has trickled over the €10,000 (£7,900) mark in seasons gone by, and while it may seem a pittance compared to the wages earned by these stars, Enrique's methods are yielding great results.
