16 Times Sports Fans Always Geek Out

Nick DimengoMar 26, 2016

Every single day, sports fans get those weird, "OMG" moments when they describe something as being insane, jaw-dropping, mind-blowing or the sickest thing they've ever seen. While that may be true, that can't possibly happen every time there's a sporting event on, right?

Sure, there are moments that get us all out of our seats, grabbing our heads with both hands and looking as if we just saw a ghost, but I'm giving you the most instances in which sports fans always geek out, no matter what—and I bet you'll relate with all of these.

16. Viral Commercials

Kids these days always say that content is king, right? Well, what better way for sports fans to go crazy than to have some of their favorite athletes starring in an epic commercial that brings out all the emotions.

From laughter to tears, when a sports commercial goes viral, sports fans just can't help but comment and share it all over their social media channels to bring all those feels that they experienced the first five times they watched it.

15. Opening Day

While baseball's Opening Day is one of my personal favorite days every year, anytime a new season begins in any sport, it's a day that fans just can't help but go crazy for.

It's for good reason, too, as the start of a new season brings a fresh start, giving fans hope that their favorite team, no matter what the experts say, could compete for a championship and surprise people.

There's just something in the air whenever opening day hits, and fans go all out for it.

14. Draft Day

Much like the aforementioned opening day, draft day is a time that brings eternal hope to sports fans, finally revealing the player his or her favorite team has decided to select and ending months of speculation and analysis.

Of course, just because fans look forward to draft day doesn't mean that it always goes as they hope, with teams making decisions that cause a bevy of reactions from fans.

Still, draft day helps fans feel like their team is getting better—even if, in the end, it just causes some franchises to fall into a deeper rut after a bad pick.

13. Madden NFL Release Day

If there's one video game that has absolutely dominated the sports landscape over the years, it's Madden NFL, which puts the hard-hitting action of the NFL into the gamers' hands.

For that reason, it's no wonder why people will line up for hours outside of their closest video game store or pre-order their copy online to make sure that they're one of the first people to see the new features of the most recent release.

I mean, come on, where else can a fan be in charge with running his or her favorite team, calling all the shots in hopes of building a winner? Only in Madden.

12. Upsets

Isn't it funny how we all complain about upsets happening, yet we all root for them to go down?

Look no further than the NCAA Tournament, which is the one place where an unknown team like a 15-seeded Middle Tennessee State team can knock off a national-title hopeful like a No. 2-seeded Michigan State team to shock the world—and people applaud it.

Sure, all of our brackets get screwed over and, for those who gamble, money is lost, but unpredictable upsets are what make sports so awesome.

11. NHL Postseason

I'm not saying that there aren't NHL fans out there, but does anyone else notice just how many more NHL fans there are once the playoffs begin for the league? Here's a hint: A TON!

While hockey doesn't get the love it probably deserves from sports fans here in the States on a regular basis, when the best teams square off in their quest for the Stanley Cup, even novice fans pay attention, as the drama and unpredictability increases.

In no other league is a low-seed more likely to make a run and win a title than the NHL, which is why the postseason is a reason to geek out.

10. Anything Stephen Curry Does

Even as a diehard Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James fan, I'm not stubborn enough not to admit that reigning league MVP Stephen Curry is just remarkable, doing things that no sports fan has seen before.

Forget the fact that the dude can shoot lights-out or that he looks like he should still be playing in a high school league somewhere, because he's as ruthless as anyone on the planet while on the basketball court.

You either love or love to hate Curry, and that's why he's become must-see TV over the years—and it should be appreciated, because it's jaw-dropping stuff.

9. One-Handed Catches

Kudos to Odell Beckham Jr., because before him, one-handed catches were thought to be something rather difficult. But now, OBJ and his fellow wideouts do it with such consistency that some players are better at them than snagging a ball with two hands.

Even as popular and ever-present as they've become, fans still can't believe their eyes when a man running at full speed somehow contorts his body and can pluck a ball out of thin air with ease.

NFL and college football players make them look so easy, but one-handed catches are so hard to pull off—which is why Average Joes freak the hell out when they happen.

8. Lethal Stiff-Arms

Want to see how strong a football player really is? Look no further than when one beastly man throws another beastly man aside with just one arm, putting the hopeful tackler to the ground in straight embarrassment.

Stiff-arms in football are like big-time dunks in basketball, as they hype up the crowd and draw all the "oohs and aahs" from those who witness them.

Many players try these things, but few are actually dominant using them, which is why they're so awesome to see.

7. Buzzer-Beaters

The thing about buzzer-beaters is that, even if they happen against our favorite team, fans still have a crazy reaction—albeit a bad one—proving just how devastating and heartbreaking these things can be.

Like aforementioned upsets, when a player hits a shot to beat the clock, it's one of those things that sports fans secretly want to see but never expect to, bringing out the rawest of emotions when they do happen and sending people into a frenzy.

6. Killer Crossovers

Want to really make an opposing player look silly? How about sending him or her to the ground after falling over their own feet because they can't quite keep up with the handles of another player?

Players like Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving are some of the best at it, but anytime a defender gets crossed up, the roar from fans and other players is always awesome—but an awful experience for the player trying to pick himself up off the hardwood.

5. Big Hits

Do I really need to describe why sports fans love big hits in football so much?

Since the beginning of time, for whatever reason, people get joy in seeing another human being getting their bell rung, marveling at the speed and strength that athletes have in timing the perfect hit.

Of course, we're all cautious in applauding if/when a player can't get up after a hardcore collision—that doesn't mean we don't still cringe a little when it happens, though.

4. The Home Run Derby

Fans during a Home Run Derby are hilarious, as they all act as if they're not there to watch a strong player blast a baseball into orbit. Like, that's the one reason the entire competition is even going on in the first place.

Still, it's pretty awesome to see, isn't it?

While a normal homer during a regular MLB game might go over 400 feet or so, a Home Run Derby is the time for a slugger to flex his muscle and try to eclipse 450 or even 500 feet, which is something most humans just can't do.

And when a batter gets into the zone and just cranks them out of the park pitch-after-pitch, fans get even more geeked out—which is cool to see.

3. Slam-Dunk Contests

There isn't a sporting event that brings out more insane cheers than a dunk contest, as fans act as if they're seeing something that has never been done before.

In some cases, yes, that's true, making normal people marvel at the unworldly hops, strength and creativity of basketball players who have no regard for human life as they take off from weird angles.

And just when we thought every single slam has been done before, the best dunkers prove that they have some tricks up their sleeves, busting out something that their predecessors even have to bow down to.

2. After Catching A Foul Ball

It's funny how the one thing baseball fans hope to leave a baseball game with is a foul ball.

And, rest assured, when someone gets the opportunity to snag one for him or herself, they do whatever they can to be remembered for it, with dances, beer chugs and other unique celebratory actions coming out.

I'm unsure of the psychological affect a foul ball has on a baseball fan, but it's something that's amazing to see—well, when the fan cuts loose and makes it the most memorable thing about that particular game.

1. When On The Jumbotron

There are two types of Jumbotron fans: The ones who do anything they can do to get on, and then the ones who embarrassingly react once they see their own mug on a giant screen for thousands to see.

When the former get their chance to shine, they embrace it, dancing through the aisles and/or doing anything they can to remain on the screen for as long as possible.

No one expects to get on the Jumbotron, so when it happens, those who appreciate it don't hold back as they seize the opportunity.
