ICC World T20 2016 Results: Wednesday's Super 10 Scores, Group Tables, Schedule

Christopher SimpsonMar 23, 2016

A stunning late collapse from Bangladesh saw hosts India clinch victory in their ICC World Twenty20 clash on Wednesday by a one-run margin.

The home side were restricted with the bat on a difficult wicket by their opponents after being put in, posting just 146 for seven. Bangladesh chased well and needed just two from the final three balls for a famous triumph. But two wickets and then a dramatic run out finished the innings, leaving them one run short on 145 for nine.

Earlier in the day, England overcame an early scare against Afghanistan to get their campaign back on track and move level on points with the West Indies in Group 1 of the Super 10s.

At one point, England were 50 for five, but a calming 41 from Moeen Ali saw them reach 142 for seven, and a strong bowling performance ensured their opponents' chase was unsuccessful as they managed 127 for nine.

Bangladesh vs. India

Having opted to bowl after winning the toss, it was clear Bangladesh felt as though there was something in this pitch. And with the ball in hand, they did well to restrict their illustrious opponents.

So many of the India batsmen got good starts but failed to kick on, including the opening duo of Rohit Sharma (18) and Shikhar Dhawan (23). The dismissal of the former brought star man Virat Kohli to the crease, and as noted by Mohandas Menon, he’s a player Bangladesh had to be wary off:

But he too struggled to find rhythm, with just one boundary struck in a run-a-ball 24 before he was bowled by Shuvagata Hom.

It was a wicket India never quite recovered from. The run-rate was given some impetus by Suresh Raina, who top scored with 30 from 23 balls, but even players like Hardik Pandya (15), Yuvraj Singh (three) and Ravindra Jadeja (12) found rhythm hard to come by in their brief vigils in the middle.

Eventually, an unbeaten 13 from MS Dhoni helped India to a mediocre total of 146 for seven from their 20 overs. Cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle praised the efforts of the underdogs in the field and was thinking an upset could well be on the cards in this one:

In response, while Mohammad Mithun fell cheaply for just one run, Bangladesh did pretty well. Up front, Tamim Iqbal knocked the ball around steadily, with 35 from 32. But crucially, in Sabbir Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan, the Tigers had players who upped the ante.

The former made 26 from 15 balls, while the latter plundered 22 from 15. While they may not strike as significant totals, they were enough to push the run-rate up ahead of India’s. When Al Hasan was dismissed, Bangladesh were looking in excellent shape on 95 for five after 12.1 overs.

Former India player Aakash Chopra made India second-favourites to triumph at this point, with time in hand for the chasing team:

The pitch seemed to be showing more and more turn as the match went on, though, making for an extremely tense final few overs, as India sought to claw their way back into the match.

Bangladesh seemed to be cruising home at one stage, although when Soumya Sarkar holed out for 21, nerves were jangling, with 21 still needed from 13 balls. Heading into the last over, 11 were needed for the underdogs, keeping the contest finely poised.

Successive boundaries from Mushfiqur Rahim put Bangladesh within touching distance of the win, but he was dismissed with three balls to go, meaning two runs from the last two balls were still needed. Then, remarkably, another wicket for Pandya off the penultimate ball meant two from one were required.

The last delivery was missed by Hom, with the ball running through to Dhoni. As Bangladesh tried to steal a quick single to take the match to a super over, the wicket-keeper was alert, sprinting to the strikers end and dislodging the bails before Rahman could get home.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan thinks the manner in which this was won could be key for India:

The home side, Pandya and Dhoni in particular, showed nerves of steel in the latter stages of this one to propel their team to an unlikely win. And while they were far from their best, it could prove to be the momentum boost needed looking ahead to the latter stages of the tournament.

Bangladesh, who were excellent for so long on the day, will wonder quite how they let this one slip away.

England vs. Afghanistan

England 142-7 (Ali 41, James Vince 22) beat Afghanistan, 127-9 (Samiullah Shenwari 22, Shafiqullah Shafiq 35) by 15 runs.

England won the toss and took to the crease first hoping to rack up an unassailable score. While they eventually did that, it took them some time to get going.

Opening batsman Jason Roy fell to Ameer Hamza after making just five runs.

The fifth over was an unmitigated disaster for England as they lost James Vince, Eoin Morgan and Joe Root in the space of four balls, with Morgan bowled by Mohammad Nabi for a golden duck. Commentator Harsha Bhogle highlighted England's struggles:

He also praised their opponents as Jos Buttler was caught at 50 for five and Ben Stokes was dismissed by Rashid Khan to make the score 57 for six:

Both Nabi and Khan bowled exceptionally well, picking up two wickets apiece and conceding just 17 runs each in their respective four overs, with the former delivering 13 dot balls and the latter 14.

Ali's arrival at the crease changed the complexion of the match as he and Chris Jordan steadied the ship, per Sky Sports Cricket:

The former's unbeaten 41 off 33 balls and the latter's 15 from 18, followed by David Willey's 20 helped England achieve a respectable score.

ESPN Cricinfo highlighted the contrast in their performance between the opening 12 overs and the final eight:

Afghanistan's turn at the crease got off to a disastrous start as they lost Mohammad Shahzad (four) after just three balls, and Asghar Stanikzai (one) was caught the following over. In the third over, Gulbadin Naib edged to Stokes for a duck and Afghanistan were 13 for three.

Rashid Khan and Noor Ali Zadran managed to rack up 15 and 17, respectively, before walking, but that still left their side in a difficult position, per Sky Sports Cricket:

Bhogle believes they will grow from their disappointment:

Nabi (12), Samuillah Shenwari and Najibullah Zadran (14) were able to kickstart Afghanistan's chase, but they eventually fell, the latter somewhat harshly done by, per Sky Sports Cricket:

A late unbeaten rally from Shafiqullah Shafiq, including four fours and two sixes, helped his side reach a commendable tally in the circumstances, but with the damage done, Afghanistan only came close at the death.

England will be disappointed with their opening 12 overs, but they will no doubt take encouragement from their impressive response.

If they get off to a similarly poor start against Sri Lanka, though, they likely won't be given the same opportunity to come back into the contest.
