March Madness 2016: Bracket Predictions, Odds Tips for Saturday Round 2 Schedule

Steve SilvermanMar 19, 2016

Just what can the Yale Bulldogs do for a March Madness encore after upsetting favored Baylor in the first round of the NCAA tournament?

The Duke Blue Devils are about to find out. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has been through this many times before. He knows what to do and say when getting his team ready to play a huge underdog that is all puffed up with confidence and hope after registering an upset in the previous game.

But Coach K can only do so much even if he has coached his team to a record 89 NCAA tournament victories. It's his players who have to make it happen. The oddsmakers have made the Blue Devils six-point favorites, according to Odds Shark.

Based on the talent and experience factor when it comes to big games, Duke seems the only way to go. The Blue Devils (24-10) have not enjoyed their best year by their own lofty standards, but they have an explosive one-two punch in Grayson Allen and Brandon Ingram that can lead them to victory in most situations.

Allen is averaging 21.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, while the highly touted Ingram is averaging 16.7 points and an impressive 6.8 boards per game. Allen was named as a first-team All-ACC player.

Few gave Yale (23-6) a legitimate chance to win against an explosive but somewhat inconsistent Baylor team in the first round. However, Yale took a lead into the locker room at halftime and built on that advantage throughout the second half. The Bulldogs had to endure a late comeback by the Bears, but they did just that and won the first NCAA tournament game in the 121-year history of Yale basketball.

Yale outrebounded Baylor by a 35-30 margin and was led in that category by Sam Downey with seven caroms. However, the big star for Yale was guard Makai Mason, who scored 31 points and made all 11 of his free-throw attempts.

Yale was able to set the tone against Baylor, but that's not going to happen against Duke. Look for the Blue Devils to take control of this game early and win by at least 10 points.

While Yale warrants attention because it fills the role of tournament darling, Indiana and Kentucky will be a compelling matchup as these two traditional teams resume their border rivalry.

Indiana head coach Tom Crean.

Indiana won the Big Ten regular-season title, and that relieved some of the pressure on head coach Tom Crean from the Hoosiers' demanding fans.

However, the Hoosiers (26-7) lost their first Big Ten conference tournament game to Michigan, and that put the heat back on the coach. The team responded well in its first-round game with a 99-74 triumph over Chattanooga.

That should put Indiana in an excellent frame of mind to take on Kentucky, an 85-57 winner over Stony Brook on Thursday.

The Hoosiers will look to Yogi Ferrell for leadership against the Wildcats (27-8). Ferrell has enjoyed the best season of his career, and he scored 20 points and handed out 10 assists against the Mocs. Troy Williams added 12 points for Indiana, and the Hoosiers may need even more from him if they are going to compete for 40 minutes with the Wildcats.

The double-double was the first for Ferrell in his career with the Hoosiers. Indiana is 65-33 in 39 all-time NCAA appearances.

DES MOINES, IA - MARCH 17: Carson Puriefoy #10 of the Stony Brook Seawolves drives against Skal Labissiere #1, Alex Poythress #22and Jamal Murray #23 of the Kentucky Wildcats in the first half during the first round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball Tour

Jamal Murray had 19 points and seven rebounds for Kentucky against Stony Brook, and all five of the Wildcats starters reached double figures. That includes point guard Tyler Ulis, who had 10 points and seven assists against the Seawolves.

The Wildcats are 3.5-point favorites over the Hoosiers, according to Odds Shark. This appears to be a game that should go down to the wire, but look for the Wildcats to prevail in the final moments and get both the win and the cover.

Kentucky's defense appears to be at the top of its game after the Wildcats blocked a tournament-record 15 shots against Stony Brook.
