NCAA Bracket 2016: Updated Schedule and Predictions After Thursday's 1st Round

Danny WebsterMar 17, 2016

Only one day of the NCAA tournament has taken place, and the madness has already begun.

The Yale Bulldogs finally won a tournament game for the first time in school history, taking down the fifth-seeded Baylor Bears in the first round. The Connecticut Huskies also made a second-half rally to beat the Colorado Buffaloes, while the Duke Blue Devils survived against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks.

Hopefully Thursday's games have gotten you ready for what's to come for Friday. Here's a look at Friday's schedule of games, as well as Saturday's second-round games.

Early Second-Round Predictions

Yale Bulldogs vs. Duke Blue Devils

Score one to the Ivy League on this day. Yale has won an NCAA tournament game, and the Bulldogs' prize for doing something they've never done is a meeting with the defending national champions.

Duke barely survived against UNC Wilmington on Thursday, in a game that showed the Blue Devils are going to need depth if they want to come close to the Final Four.

Duke got its usual production from Brandon Ingram (20 points) and Grayson Allen (23 points), but senior center Marshall Plumlee came out of nowhere to score 23 points (on 9-of-10 shooting) and grabbed eight rebounds to propel Duke to a win. To put Plumlee's performance into perspective, he scored at least 20 points only once in the regular season.

The Blue Devils played only seven players against the Seahawks. This lack of depth, no matter how good the talent is, can't possibly sustain for long. And after allowing 85 points in its first-round matchup, Duke has to play a 12th-seeded Yale team that defeated the Baylor Bears.

Leading that Yale team is the nation's favorite player early in this tournament, point guard Makai Mason. Here's your friendly reminder Mason is a sophomore and scored 31 points to beat Baylor. He's showing up in a big way on the biggest stage.

Even Washington Wizards point guard John Wall had to stop and acknowledge Mason's play, per Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post:

Yale has that combination of rebounding and leadership that most lower seeds don't possess. If this game comes down to which team can get a rebound, it's going to be the Bulldogs. Yale pulls off the upset, and Mason will be the one to notch another one for the Ivy League.

Wichita State Shockers vs. Miami Hurricanes

It's March. That means Wichita State is involved in the NCAA tournament once again with a really good chance to break some more brackets.

The Shockers defeated the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday to set up a Saturday showdown with the No. 3 seed Miami Hurricanes. Miami is coming off a 79-72 win over the Buffalo Bulls on Thursday.

If you're a fan of senior guard play, this is the game for you. Both teams feature veteran leadership in their backcourts that dictates the tempo of the game. Wichita State features Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, while Sheldon McClellan and Angel Rodriguez lead the Canes into this matchup.

Whichever duo can outperform the other will win this game. There's no wrong choice with this game, either. With the Shockers, there's this fact, per Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports:

And on the 10-year anniversary of the George Mason Patriots' improbable run to the Final Four, Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga has his Hurricanes believing they can re-create that magic, per Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated:

"

No one benefitted more from that run that George Mason coach Jim Larrañaga, a respected but obscure mid-major lifer who captured the country's affection. Americans got to see Larrañaga's unique combination of sideline guile and grandfatherly charm, turning him into one of the sport's most endearing boldface names.

In 2011, Larrañaga left George Mason for an ACC basketball backwater at the University of Miami. Larrañaga's ability to resuscitate a lifeless program into an ACC contender may be as incredible a career accomplishment as engineering Mason's magical March. When on Wednesday asked about his crowning professional achievement at Mason a decade ago, the 66-year old Larrañaga responded with a twinkle in his eye. "I hope at the end of this season," he said, "that it's not."

"

Wichita State's defense held Arizona to 55 points, when the Wildcats averaged 81.2 per game in the regular season. The Shockers won't beat a team with offense. The way to beat them is to have a team that has one scorer who can take over the game.

Rodriguez might be the one to do that after a 24-point outing against Buffalo. Wichita State has been the definition of a Cinderella story the last few years, but Miami may have enough to pull out a win. In a one-score game, the Canes get the win.
