Tottenham vs. Borussia Dortmund: Team News, Predicted Lineups, Stream, TV Info

Tottenham face a nearly impossible task if they wish to reach the last eight of the Europa League.

Based on their lineup and limp performance in the first leg against Borussia Dortmund, it appears as though they aren't particularly interested in doing so.

Nevertheless, Mauricio Pochettino has challenged his players to prove the 3-0 embarrassment in Germany was a one-off.

Spurs fans will at least be hoping their team can produce a more-impressive display even if they fail to progress.

The visitors have conceded just one goal in their last nine matches in all competitions, so Tottenham must produce a remarkable performance to simply level this tie on the night.

They can take some hope from FC Brugge's performance in 1987 when they overturned the same first-leg deficit against Dortmund in the old UEFA Cup.

Players to Watch

Josh Onomah was the brightest performer on a forgettable night in the first leg.

ENFIELD, ENGLAND - MARCH 16: Erik Lamela of Tottenham Hotspur (L) waits for a pass during a training session ahead of the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, second leg match between Tottenham Hotspur FC and Borussia Dortmund at White Hart Lane on March 16,

He seemed the only player likely to make a chance happen and was willing to support his full-back as the yellow waves of Dortmund's attack crashed down on an otherwise exposed back line.

The young English attacker is yet to really leave his mark on a game, but his capacity to combine defensive solidity with daring attacking play make him just the kind of player Spurs will need if they have any hope of upsetting the odds at White Hart Lane.

If this does prove to be Spurs' European swan song, Onomah will need to eloquently state his case for time in the Premier League.

He evidently has the potential, and this is the perfect chance for him to really break out and stamp himself as a first-team player.

Julian Weigl has been a quiet achiever in Dortmund's outstanding season.

He joined from 1860 Munich over the summer and has been regularly involved as his new club have shot up the table after a difficult 2014-15 season.

Weigl anchored Dortmund's midfield against Spurs in the first leg, and he will be key to avoiding any hint of a Tottenham resurgence.

His role protecting the back four and starting attacks is vital to a team that plays so quickly.

If Spurs are to do the unlikely and win this tie, they'll need total dominance in midfield, making Weigl the key man to both side's hopes.

Key Battle

In Germany, Dortmund stopped any kind of sustained possession for Spurs by applying rapid pressure whenever they tried to play out from defence.

Time and again, Spurs midfielders and attackers were surrounded and quickly dispossessed.

This gang-tackling style was extremely effective because all of Tottenham's physically strong and technical players were absent.

Dier, Dembele and Harry Kane were all left out of the lineup, and the likes of Heung-Min Son, Tom Carroll and Nacer Chadli replaced them.

At White Hart Lane, it will be a similar lineup, but Dier is likely to start, which should alter the equation somewhat.

Dele Alli's capacity to push up in support of the forwards also means Dortmund will be unable to commit so many players to the man on the ball. If he features, he is likely to create havoc between the lines as usual.

Dortmund's defensive system allowed them to dominate the ball in attacking areas in the first leg, and that will be the key to this match too.

Dembele would be the ideal man to puncture this approach, but he's unlikely to be involved, so Dortmund should retain midfield control again.

Team News

Pochettino hinted Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen would be rested for this tie in his pre-match press conference. Dele Alli is available again after missing the first leg through suspension, while Eric Dier was also rested last week and will be considered.

Dortmund remain at full strength as they were last week, having suffered no fresh injuries in their weekend victory over Mainz.

Odds

Dortmund are the favourites to win this one, being offered at almost even money with Spurs at 5-2, according to Oddschecker.

The home side are 20-1 to progress, but that probably doesn't offer a great deal of value.

Backing Spurs to win 2-1 on the night offers odds of 10-1. That seems to be a likely outcome that would more or less satisfy both sides.

A riskier bet might be either Kevin Wimmer or Toby Alderweireld to open the scoring with both centre-backs paying 33-1.
