Let's take a look at the updated bracket and schedule after the tournament opener:
Updated Schedule
| Date | Matchup | Time (ET) |
| March 17 | No. 16 FGCU vs. No. 1 UNC | 7:20 p.m. |
| March 17 | No. 11 Wichita State vs. No. 6 Arizona | 9:20 p.m. |
Florida Gulf Coast 96, Fairleigh Dickinson 65
In convincing fashion, Florida Gulf Coast moved on to the round of 64 with a 96-65 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday night in the most lopsided First Four game ever.
The Eagles were led by forward Marc-Eddy Norelia, who recorded his 15th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was one of four Florida Gulf Coast players who recorded at least 10 points on the night.
The team that earned the nickname Dunk City during its miracle run to the Sweet 16 in 2013 started the game in its usual fashion, via the Atlantic Sun Conference:
The Eagles punched first and punched hard as they started the game on an 11-0 run. Thanks to its size, FGCU was able to dominate down low and dictate things on the offensive end of the floor.
ESPN Stats & Info showed just how dominant Florida Gulf Coast was down low in the first half:
The Eagles shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, while Fairleigh Dickinson shot just 20 percent. It helped FGCU build a 21-point lead at halftime, where the Eagles had more rebounds than Fairleigh Dickinson had points.
Even with such a big lead, Florida Gulf Coast head coach Joe Dooley didn't look comfortable:
When Fairleigh Dickinson tried to key in on FGCU's success in the paint, the Eagles burned the Knights from the outside. They shot 4-of-6 from three-point range in the first eight minutes of the second half to maintain their lead after the Knights attempted to mount a run.
The hot shooting stayed consistent in the second half as FGCU ended the game with a 59.6 percent mark from the field.
The Eagles' reward for putting on such a dominant performance in Dayton, Ohio, though, is a first-round date against No. 1-seeded North Carolina in Raleigh. But if FGCU is able to shoot the ball and excel in the paint like it did Tuesday, then it could keep the game somewhat close.
Reaction
There wasn't much back-patting from Florida Gulf Coast after its big win. Instead, the Eagles were looking ahead to a matchup with the North Carolina Tar Heels and a chance to make history.
Norelia, who had the biggest game, set the tone as he spoke with the media, via Seth Soffian of USA Today Sports.
"We’re just going to stay confident and believe in ourselves and give it our best effort," Norelia said. "Anything can happen. As long as we do what coach says. I’m pretty sure we can make it happen if it’s possible."
Head coach Joe Dooley echoed those sentiments but realized he has a big, physical team that could bang around with the likes of Brice Johnson and the Tar Heels, via Soffian.
"We can play with big teams, height-wise,” Dooley said. “We’ve played in some big arenas. We’ve played some teams. But it will be a whole different animal on Thursday."
ESPN Stats & Info took a look at what's next for FGCU:
In order to create history and be the first No. 16 seed to ever take down a No. 1, Dooley and his Eagles will have to play the biggest game of their lives on one of the biggest stages, too.
Wichita State 70, Vanderbilt 50
Wichita State powered its way past Vanderbilt 70-50 on Thursday night thanks to an excellent 10-minute stretch to end the game.
With a 50-48 lead with 8:42 left in the second half, Wichita State went on a 20-2 run to bury the Commodores. In the entire second half, Wichita State outscored Vanderbilt 40-20.
The Shockers were led by guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, who scored 14 points apiece on the night.
Vanderbilt, on the other hand, shot 31 percent from the floor, far off of its season average of 46 as its offense just never got going. Only one player, Joe Toye, scored in double digits for the Commodores.
Neither offense started well, though. After the first half, it was 30-30 while both teams combined to go 18-of-50 from the field.
Of the 60 first-half points, 22 of them came from the free-throw line as CBS Sports' Jon Solomon broke down the opening 20 minutes:
The lone bright spot from either team was Toye, who came off the bench to provide the Commodores with all 10 of his points in the first 20 minutes. It was well over his season average of 3.4 points per game and tied his career high.
That wasn't enough for ESPN's Max Bretos:
Baker and VanVleet took over the second half, sparking Wichita State to a 16-0 run that began in the final minutes of the first. The two Wichita State guards scored the team's first 15 points of the half as the Shockers opened up a 10-point lead.
Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde enjoyed the same thing he's been watching for four years Tuesday night:
When VanVleet wasn't scoring, he provided the helpers:
Vanderbilt, though, found a way to get back in it with a 13-4 run as a healthy Wichita State lead turned to a 50-48 scoreline with nine minutes to play.
But that's as close as it would get after Wichita State's huge ending to clinch its spot as the No. 11 seed. It'll take on No. 6 Arizona in the second round where it will surely start garnering talk of upsetting the Pac-12's Wildcats.
