Everton vs. Chelsea: Score, Reaction from 2016 FA Cup Quarter-Final

Christopher SimpsonMar 12, 2016

Everton progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday after they beat Chelsea 2-0 at Goodison Park in a fiery encounter. Romelu Lukaku bagged a brace against his former side, while Diego Costa and Gareth Barry both saw red late on.

Lukaku broke the deadlock with a sublime solo effort after 77 minutes and showed predatory instincts to double Everton's lead shortly after. Costa had an ongoing rivalry with Barry throughout the match and picked up both yellow cards for aggressive behaviour toward the midfielder, who earned his second booking of the game just minutes after the Spain international was dismissed.

Chelsea's Brazilian-born Spanish striker Diego Costa (3rd L) is shown a red card by referee Michael Oliver during the English FA cup quarter-final football match between Everton and Chelsea at Goodison Park in Liverpool, north west England on March 12, 20

For the majority of the proceedings, the match made up in intensity what it lacked in quality, with both sides committed but creating few clear-cut chances until late on.

An end-to-end start to proceedings saw Tom Cleverley shoot straight at Thibaut Courtois from outside the area, while at the other end of the pitch, Kenedy lashed an effort over the bar after playing a one-two with Pedro on the left flank.

The match remained at a frantic pace for the rest of the half, but that actually proved a detriment to the level of quality on show, as the two squads struggled to maintain composure in the final third, with tackles flying in from both sides.

Costa was in a typically aggressive mood and was deservedly booked for a foul on Barry inside 10 minutes, per ESPN FC's Liam Twomey:

Per Twomey and journalist Dan Levene, their ongoing rivalry characterised the first half:

With Everton pressing and harrying the Blues all over the pitch, Chelsea's midfield struggled to find a way through the Toffees:

Supporters were finally rewarded with another shot on target in the final minutes of the half when Willian forced a fairly comfortable save from Joel Robles with a well-struck but central free-kick.

BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer ran the rule over proceedings at the break, per Match of the Day:

Squawka Football shared some of the best images of the game so far:

Ramiro Funes Mori came close shortly after the restart, heading a corner from Cleverley narrowly over, while Gary Cahill had to make an excellent tackle to prevent Lukaku from racing clean through.

Costa came the closest shortly before the hour-mark when he rounded Robles on the right from a delightful through ball from Cesc Fabregas, but the striker could only direct his effort across goal from an extremely tight angle.

Everton full-backs Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines pushed forward with more freedom in the second half as the hosts slowly built some pressure. Ross Barkley blasted an effort wide from a narrow angle, while Courtois had to be alert to close down Lukaku as he looked to get on the end of a through ball.

The striker broke the deadlock soon after, though. From wide on the left, he cut inside and with great strength and skill wriggled his way into the penalty area past Cesar Azpilicueta, John Obi Mikel and Cahill before picking out the far bottom corner.

Lukaku doubled his tally just five minutes later when he lashed James McCarthy's through ball between the goalkeeper's legs.

Squawka Football highlighted his incredible form:

Soon after, Costa's rivalry with Barry finally came to a head after the Everton man tackled him and the Chelsea forward responded by sticking his head into the former England international.

Barry would be sent down the tunnel minutes later for a careless foul on Fabregas, as BBC Sport's Phil McNulty noted:

Nevertheless, Everton were able to hang on for a memorable win and will join Crystal Palace in the all-Premier League semi-finals.

Manager Roberto Martinez has lifted the FA Cup before, so they stand an excellent chance of doing so again.

Post-Match Reaction

Martinez played down suggestions Costa bit Barry when he put his face into his neck, per the Guardian's Paul Wilson:

"

Gareth has said it is nothing to worry about. The last thing I am going to do on a day like this is to see if an opposing player has bitten my player. It was not a key moment, it did not have an impact on the result or the scoreline, it came after both the goals had been scored.

I thought a second yellow was the correct decision after he moved his head towards Gareth. I would like to praise the referee, because it was a game of high emotions and he handled it well.

"

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink was also asked for his take on Costa and said:

"

He was chased a bit in the game. Everton did not do anything outside the rules but they went after him. Initially I was not sure whether to play him in this game after he picked up an injury last time, but he desperately wanted to play. With hindsight it might have been better to leave him out, but it was a cup tie, not the sort of game in which you want to rest your best players.

"

The Dutchman also suggested the striker should watch the film Anger Management: "Isn’t there a movie about that with Jack Nicholson? Maybe we should go and watch it together."
