HS Team Holds Ball for Entirety of Overtime, Wins State Semifinal at the Buzzer
This is clock management at its finest.
On Friday, Valley High School senior Turner Scott buried a floater at the second overtime horn to defeat Pleasant Valley 50-48 in an Iowa Class 4A state semifinal.
This came after his team milked the clocked for the entire second overtime.
Valley head coach B.J. Windhorst explained the tactic, per Chris Cuellar of the Des Moines Register:
"We got the tip, and were moving the ball around and I looked up and saw there was 2:35 left. I figured, 'Well, if they're not going to come out, why would we go shoot quick and give [Pleasant Valley star Will] Carius a chance?'
We'll just whittle it down, use our timeouts and get the last shot and make sure they can't have a chance to win it.
"
Though surely frustrated, Valley's opponent didn't seem overly angry with the tactic.
"Obviously, we didn't like it, but if we had the lead, we'd probably do the same thing," Pleasant Valley senior Carter Milam said, per Cuellar. "You want to try to win the game."
In the middle of March, when madness reigns supreme in college basketball, this feels strange.
But hey, a win is a win.
