Recap
After coming from behind to beat Taylor in the semi-finals, Mighty Mike had plenty of momentum heading into his clash with Wright.
Snakebite was relatively comfortable in his own semi against Klaasen, largely due to the Cobra's wasteful performance rather than clinical play on his part.
He faced a difficult task in the final, as Live Darts illustrated:
A 32 finish for the Dutchman saw him draw first blood on his throw, with both players hitting a 180 in an electric start to proceedings.
Wright took out 64 to level the scores, but once again, Van Gerwen restored his lead and then broke to open up some breathing room on his opponent after Wright missed two chances to check out on tops.
Sports broadcaster Russell Aitken hailed the 26-year-old's performance:
A 61 checkout on double 16 for Wright reduced the deficit to two legs, but Van Gerwen immediately set about restoring his three-leg lead. Despite the fact Wright missed a 161 finish on the bull, a double eight took him to 5-3.
Again Van Gerwen responded, this time with a 12-darter culminating in a 105 checkout. The Scot then slipped four behind, per Live Darts, who gave the key stats:
Mighty Mike took out double two and then 76 as he moved within two legs of victory. A 74 checkout took him 10-3 up.
Van Gerwen missed three chances to win at double 18, allowing Wright to briefly delay the inevitable as he claimed just his fourth leg.
Wright almost added another in spectacular fashion, as PDC Darts reveals:
His miss proved costly, though, as it opened the door for his opponent to seal his second major title of the year.
Van Gerwen was delighted with the win, per PDC Darts, and vowed "there was still more in the tank:"
It is Van Gerwen's 20th televised title win, and after winning so emphatically, it sets him up nicely for the upcoming Players Championship, which begins on March 12.
