Recap
Van Gerwen didn't waste any time booking his spot in the quarter-final, beating Huybrechts 9-2 after falling behind early. The Order of Merit leader once again showed why he's the most feared player in the sport right now, hitting half of his doubles and averaging over 102 on his way to an easy win.
Mighty Mike impressed during the afternoon session as well, cruising to a 9-5 win over Rob Cross. The Dutchman provided one of the top moments of the tournament by sandwiching a nine-darter in between 170 finishes, per Live Darts:
But Van Gerwen's performance was overshadowed by little-known qualifier Lynn, who became the first qualifier to reach the quarter-finals of the UK Open, per ITV's Jacqui Oatley.
His win over Kellett on Stage 2 during the evening session was remarkable, but his best performance took place earlier in the day when he shocked Anderson in Round 4.
Lynn stormed out to an improbable 4-0 lead and missed a dart to make it 5-0, handing the Flying Scotsman a chance to get on the board. Anderson closed the gap to 5-2, before Lynn won another three consecutive legs to put himself within a single leg of the win.
It took him two tries to complete the upset, causing the Butlins Minehead Resort to explode. Per PDC Darts' official website, he fully believes in his chances to beat whoever he faces next:
"It feels amazing. Going 4-0 up probably didn't help me and I was a bit jittery, but I was always confident that I could grind out a result from being 4-1 up.
"
If someone else can take out Michael van Gerwen, I'd be very grateful and very confident I could win this now - I've just taken out a two-time World Champion so I'm not afraid of anyone!
He continued his run with a closely fought win over Kellett during the evening session, producing a fine 125 checkout to qualify for the quarter-finals. Even Riley's Sports Bar, which set up the qualifier tournament, joined in on the fun:
Lynn's efforts on Saturday were rewarded with a quarter-final date with Van Gerwen, which should provide one of the most memorable darts matches of the year.
Jelle Klaasen also caused a minor upset, beating Adrian Lewis 9-7, while Taylor beat Van der Voort by the same score to reach the last eight.
The Power beat Barney van Barneveld in the fourth round, his first-ever win over the Dutchman at the UK Open, and he appears in fine form heading into the last day of the competition.
