Iconic Sports Movie Quotes You'll Never Use in Real Life*

Nick DimengoMar 5, 2016

There are thousands of sports movies out there with memorable lines we all know, but there are only a handful that have become a part of our vernacular to become part of everyday culture.

So while we can all recognize some of the best lines from sports movies like inspirational speeches or heartfelt messages, these are the most iconic lines from sports films, which everyone has used on more than just one occasion.

16. "Nobody Makes Me Bleed My Own Blood, Nobody!"

TOP NEWS

Movie: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

This movie has so many good one-liners that it was hard to pick just one, but anytime I think of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, besides hilarity, I think of this phrase.

In fact, it's not uncommon for either me or a friend to use it anytime we see ourselves bleeding somewhere, even if saying it makes little sense.

Another iconic line is, "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball," but, really, how often are people using that in everyday life?

15. "Sweep the Leg"

Movie: The Karate Kid

It might not be something that we all say to one another on a daily basis, but if you're to say the words, "sweep the leg," to anyone, I guarantee you that 90 percent of people will no exactly what you're talking about and understand the reference.

A dirty move in the world of sports—especially with a hobbled competitor as was the case in The Karate Kid—this is one of those lines that will live on for eternity.

14. "If You Ain't First, You're Last"

MovieTalladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

There are so many Will Ferrell movies that are quotable it's not even funny, but one that might be head and shoulders above the rest is Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, where the actor plays the most redneck NASCAR driver anyone could ever imagine.

Shouting out ridiculous sayings throughout the film, his "if you ain't first, you're last" quote is the one that most people will remember the most—and people use regularly because it's just so freakin' absurd.

13. "That's What Losing Sounds Like"

Movie: Moneyball

It's not that this line is often repeated or that millions of people would necessarily recognize it like others on this list, but, man, was it intense and understood.

The movie Moneyball is full of moments where Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane is trying to do anything he can to overcome the odds with a little engine that could mentality, going against traditional wisdom in building a division champion.

And the phrase where he shuns his players for dancing after a loss is a perfect epithet, leaving the locker room upset after saying this to his team.

12. "Funky Butt Lovin'"

Movie: Rookie of the Year

One of my all-time favorite movies, I had to give it some love by adding this beauty of a one-liner into this piece because, believe it or not, I still actually say it more than I'd like to admit.

Sure, it's sophomoric and I have no idea what the hell it actually means, but that's what makes it so random and funny—and, if said in the North Side of Chicago, will instantly get people's attention who pick up the reference from the movie Rookie of the Year.

11. "Go Pick Me Out A Winner, Bobby"

Movie: The Natural

In the case of the movie, The Natural, Roy Hobbs is referring to the batboy picking out the best piece of lumber for Roy to use while at the plate. And while not everyone would be able to pick out the movie this line is from, there's a good chance you'll hear it more often than you realize if you really paid attention.

Generally used in a moment of luck—like the lottery—the phrase "go pick me out a winner" will always be synonymous with Roy Hobbs in many sports fans' eyes.

10. "Left Side, Strong Side"

Movie: Remember the Titans

It's hard to watch this scene and not get a little choked up because of what it symbolizes—a team, and two races divided, coming together as the two best players mesh.

As great as the scene was from Remember the Titans, the term "left side, strong side" has sort of taken off into something even bigger, as it has become as part of culture as a Kardashian's Instagram account.

Meant to show strength and unity, this is a phrase that will always be remembered from the Titans.

9. "Juuuuuuuuust A Bit Outside"

Movie: Major League

What makes this line so epic is the fact that it's actually become a popular phrase for broadcasters to use during MLB games, bringing the movie Major League to life anytime a pitcher tosses one that's, well, "juuuuuuuuust a bit outside."

With the Cleveland Indians struggling to do anything right in the movie Major League, the team's play-by-play man, Harry Doyle, needed to butter up the action for those listening on the radio, using his sarcasm to do it.

Today, it's the perfect insult to say when a buddy completely misses something wide left or right—and we can thank Doyle's character for that.

8. "I Don't Want Your Life"

Movie: Varsity Blues

I don't know what it is, but the phrase, "I don't want, your life," is something that a ton of people still use—and it's always said in the deep, Texan accent of quarterback John Moxon in Varsity Blues.

Regardless of how or when it's used, everyone knows what movie it's from and, for some reason, always lightens the mood when it's said.

Seriously, the next time you get in an argument, just say this to the other person and see their reaction, it'd be priceless.

7. "We're Gonna Skate To One Song, And One Song Only"

Movie: Blades of Glory

The fact that this line got used in a freakin' Kanye West and Jay Z song should tell you everything you need to know about how iconic it is, as it's the very first words someone hears on the duos song, "N----s in Paris."

While people may associate the phrase with that song more than the movie Blades of Glory, that doesn't take away from the fact that Chazz Michael Michaels' created something with more street cred than any other figure skater has in history.

6. "I Must Break You"

Movie: Rocky IV

I really hope that this isn't something you say very often, but if it is, more power to you—because you're a much bigger badass than me.

For those who don't find yourself using it, that doesn't mean you don't know where it's from, as Ivan Drago used these very words to intimidate Rocky Balboa before their bout in Rocky IV, giving fans one of the most threatening phrases from any sports movie in history.

5. "You're Killin' Me, Smalls!"

Movie: The Sandlot

I don't know if there's a week when I don't hear the phrase, "you're killin me, Smalls," used by someone, no joke.

As the go-to saying when a person wants to share their feelings without being overly mean, everyone and their mother know that Ham says it to Scotty in The Sandlot, showing disgust if/when the latter doesn't understand a reference.

And for those of you who might not remember where this came from, well, "you're killin' me, Smalls."

4. "If You Build It, He Will Come"

Movie: Field of Dreams

I'll be the first to admit that, given it's whispering delivery in the movie, the phrase, "if you build it, he will come," is a little creepy than it probably should be. That doesn't mean it's not one of the most iconic lines from a sports film, though.

When small town farmer Ray Kinsella hears those very words while out around his cornfields, he would have never thought the ghosts of ballplayers past would be there.

And for those who either hear or say it today—or some variation—there's a good chance you know that it came from the movie Field of Dreams.

3. "The Price Is Wrong, B---h!"

Editor's Note: Video contains NSFW language

Movie: Happy Gilmore

Honestly, is there a better insult to say to someone than this phrase that came to us courtesy of the movie Happy Gilmore? Don't answer that, because there isn't.

Short, sweet and to the point, when Gilmore utters it during his fight with game show Bob Barker on the golf course, it became a worldwide phenomenon that is still used 20 years after the movie was released.

In fact, Happy Gilmore has so many good one-liners that there's a good chance you use them all the time, this one just happens to be the most iconic.

2. *"Show Me The Money"

Movie: Jerry Maguire

Here's the exception to the rest of the piece.

At some point in my life, I hope to be such a boss that I'm able to use the line "show me the money" during a negotiation, simply saying, "look, I don't have time to sit here, dance around and go back-and-forth, OK, so just give me what I want."

That's essentially what Rod Tidwell was saying to his agent Jerry Maguire, making sure the power agent fully understood loud and clear what the wide receiver valued most in his next contract.

I'd say that people do use this saying even though most may not even know where it came from — which is the sign of an iconic saying.

1. "There's No Crying In Baseball"

Movie: A League of Their Own

To this day, it's "there's no crying in baseball" is still one of the most iconic phrases from any film, not just a sports movie.

So when manager Jimmy Dugan said these five simple words to one of his players, Evelyn Gardner, who knew that the saying would become synonymous with the sport of baseball for eternity?

Of course, just because everyone knows the popular line and where it came from, that doesn't mean that it's true, as we've seen plenty of ballplayers cry while playing the game for numerous reasons.
