La Liga Results 2016: Latest Scores, Table, Odds After Saturday's Week 26 Games

James DudkoFeb 27, 2016

Antoine Griezmann won the Madrid derby for Atletico by netting the only goal of the game to beat Real at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday and make history. The result leaves Atleti firmly in La Liga's title race, yet it's all but ended Real's hopes.

That can be assured by leaders and title favourites Barcelona beating Sevilla at the Camp Nou on Sunday to open up a 12-point lead over their bitter rivals.

Here are the final scores from Saturday's fixtures:

Recap

Atletico's win made them the only club in La Liga history to win three matches in a row at the home of Los Blancos, according to Sky Sports' Pete Hall.

In typical fashion, the win was sealed by Griezmann, Atletico's wonderfully gifted attacking talisman. The French forward's movement was keenly perceptive all game, until he finally punished the Real defence by capping a stylish break just after half-time.

As Sky Sports Statto noted, when Griezmann scores, Atletico simply don't lose:

Griezmann was the match-winner, but the real reason for victory came from yet another stubborn defensive effort. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak, centre-back Diego Godin and right-back Juanfran were all outstanding for the visitors.

Admittedly, they were assisted by a particularly tame showing in forward areas from the hosts. In particular, striker Karim Benzema failed to rise to the occasion, with his struggles detailed by Squawka:

This costly defeat continues a worrying trend for Los Merengues against the division's stronger teams this season, per Sky Sports Statto:

Ronaldo courted controversy after the game by suggesting his teammates aren't good enough to win the title, according to Spanish source AS:

But he attempted to backtrack from his words when speaking to Spanish publication Marca.

Either way, BBC Sport's Andy West chided Ronaldo for his inability to impact the biggest games during this campaign:

After Ronaldo drew a blank, Celta Vigo secured a hard-fought single-goal win in Getafe. As is often the case with Celta, the decisive contribution was provided by crafty and prolific wide forward Nolito.

OptaJose detailed how often Nolito has been a match-winner in the league this season:

Celta have now put pressure on Villarreal in the race for a top-four spot.

At the other end of the table, Espanyol earned a vital three points thanks to a fine 4-2 win away to Sporting Gijon. Gerard bagged a brace for the Catalan club, who also got a goal from Real Madrid loanee Burgui.

Espanyol have now moved four points clear of the drop zone.

Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano also remain in the relegation mix after playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Ruben Castro scored twice for hosts Betis before Manucho did the same to rescue a point for the visitors.

The equaliser was a special strike, one described by AS:

Finally, Malaga drew with Real Sociedad at Anoeta Stadium after Duje Cop found the net with just over 10 minutes gone in the second half. But Imanol Agirretxe thundered in a leveller late on.

The result didn't do much for either team's hunt for a European place.

But it's Real who now look out of the hunt for the title. Barca justifiably remain favourites and can cement that status with another three points.
