Barclays U21 Premier League 2016: Monday Results, Updated Table and Schedule

Tom SunderlandFeb 22, 2016

The 10 men of Reading held Southampton to a 1-1 draw on Monday evening as the only Division 1 fixture as the Barclays Under-21 Premier League saw the south-coast hosts concede late and fail to pick up all three points.

Arsenal's under-21s missed their chance to close the gap on Division 2 leaders Derby County after their clash with Blackburn Rovers was postponed, but they were pleased to hear the Rams dropped points at home.

The Seagulls travelled to Derby without a win in their 10 previous outings, and the Gunners will be overjoyed with their timing, as they held the Rams to a 2-2 draw, while Aston Villa moved up to second.

Recap

Southampton looked capable of taking all three points in the only Division 1 matchup of Monday's evening slate, but coach Radhi Jaidi will likely have been saddened to see his side come undone against the Royals.

Reading defender Shane Griffin was sent off just seven minutes into the clash at Staplewood, and after the clash went in scoreless at the break, a quick shift in tactics saw captain Dominic Gape give Southampton the lead after the restart:

Armani Little also saw chances go astray, and the Saints let a maximum-points haul fall from reach after Jack Stacey was given enough room to hammer home a half-volleyed equaliser just 10 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Brighton let go of a 2-0 lead in their trip to Derby, but Matt Holt Tips nevertheless described a sharing of the spoils as something of a shock result for the basement outfit in Division 2:

A win would have been enough to shift Brighton off the bottom of the table, but a second-half goal from Kwame Thomas combined with Callum Guy's 90th-minute equaliser meant the Rams were spared some blushes.

Earlier in the day, Fulham trounced coach Peter Beardsley's Newcastle United side 3-0 on their own turf to move up to seventh and just six points away from the top three.

Mikolaj Kwietniewski, 16, opened the scoring for the Cottagers before Stephen Humphrys added a second from the penalty spot and capped off the victory by notching his second deep into injury time.

Aston Villa were another team who managed to cope with 10 men as they beat Swansea City 2-1, and the Birmingham outfit were full of confidence after the Sun reported on the development team's recent success over their senior counterparts:

Keinan Davis and Riccardo Calder put the Villains 2-0 up before Thomas Leggett was shown a straight red with 30 minutes of the match remaining, and Oliver McBurnie's late penalty proved only consolatory for the Swans.

In the other west Midlands affair, Wolverhampton Wanderers played host to West Ham United and drew 1-1 thanks to Hakeem Odofin's late, saving strike for the home side following Sam Ford's early opener for the Hammers.
