Italy vs. England: Winners and Losers from 2016 RBS 6 Nations Clash

Danny CoyleFeb 14, 2016

England remain on course for a Grand Slam after a 40-9 win over Italy in Rome on Sunday.

Eddie Jones wanted his side to give the Azzurri a hiding, and they duly delivered, albeit after a tight first half.

England now have Ireland at home in two weeks' time to further their chances of a first Grand Slam since 2003.

Italy will need to lick their wounds and rebuild confidence after a second straight defeat.

Here are your winners and losers from this RBS Six Nations clash.

Winner: Jonathan Joseph

1 of 5

Jonathan Joseph enjoys playing against Italy. He ripped them apart last season at Twickenham in his first Six Nations and did it again in Rome.

The Bath centre plundered a hat-trick of tries to help guide England to a handsome win that did not look on the cards after a stodgy first half.

He earned his first try after intercepting a pass and latched on to a perfectly judged grubber from Danny Care for his second. He finished his third with a display of power to carry his tackler over the line.

Loser: Leonardo Sarto

2 of 5

The score was 11-9 when Leonardo Sarto handed a gift-wrapped interception try to Jonathan Joseph.

The Italy wing threw a terrible pass that was picked off by the England man, and it opened the floodgates for the visitors.

Sarto won't enjoy watching a replay of that howler.

Winners: England's Replacements

3 of 5

After a stilted first half, England's bench helped break Italy's resistance with an injection of pace and power.

Eddie Jones rolled on the likes of Maro Itoje and Joe Launchbury to great effect, but it was the extra zip from Danny Care that also made a major difference.

His neat kick for Jonathan Joseph's second try was a superb piece of skill, and he was a real pest during his time on the field. The Telegraph's Mick Cleary wrote: "Care was terrifically sharp and busy, his pace and finely-tuned instincts serving his team so well."

Loser: Italy's Injuries Take a Toll

4 of 5

Italy didn't have the best of luck on the injury front.

Coach Jacques Brunel saw Gonzalo Garcia, Marco Fuser and Alessandro Zanni all depart before half-time, which hampered Italy's ability to stay competitive.

Italy can still point to fine performances from Michele Campagnaro and the indomitable Sergio Parisse, but the loss of those three men undeniably weakened the team.

Winner: Eddie Jones

5 of 5

Things are going well for England's new coach. Eddie Jones saw his side grind out a win in Scotland and then demanded they give Italy a smack.

After a first half in which they did not follow his orders, they bucked their ideas up after the break, so whatever the Australian told them in the sheds had the desired effect.

Jones had further reason to smile with the debut off the bench of Maro Itoje, who looked to the international manor born. The coach was also justified in sticking with Jonathan Joseph, whose hat-trick had quelled the called for Wasps' Elliot Daly to wear the No. 13 jersey.

Two away games, two wins and a misfiring Ireland come to Twickenham next—Jones' start to his time in charge is starting to show signs of great promise.
