La Liga Table 2016 Week 24: Standings and Final Scores After Sunday

James DudkoFeb 14, 2016

Fernando Torres has found a sudden rich vein of form in front of goal after netting to help Atletico Madrid win in Getafe on Sunday and reclaim second place in La Liga.

But Atletico saw Barcelona maintain a three-point lead at the top after a stunning 6-1 demolition of Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou. The reigning champions produced an attacking masterclass, featuring a particularly audacious penalty goal between Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Atleti still leapfrogged city rivals Real Madrid in the table, on a day when Real Sociedad recorded a big win, while Sevilla and Eibar also picked up precious points.

Recap

It was all about club hero Torres, as manager Diego Simeone's team earned a valuable away win. Torres scored his second in as many games in less than two minutes when he tapped home a Yannick Carrasco cross.

The finish continued what is a mini-revival for a striker who has found goals hard to come by ever since his peak years with Premier League side Liverpool.

Squawka confirmed how long it's been since Torres scored in two straight matches:

MisterChip (English) also detailed how Torres, who scored his 100th goal for Atletico recently, is making quick work of starting his second century:

In typical fashion, Atletico ceded the ball for most of the rest of the game. But Simeone knows he can count on a smart and uncompromising defence.

So it proved, as centre-backs Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez, along with goalkeeper Jan Oblak, kept Getafe frustrated.

But part of Atletico's joy was dampened after Barcelona beat a Celta Vigo side that had won two straight league games against last season's treble winners. As usual, Barca's awesome front three of Messi, Suarez and Neymar was just too much to handle.

Messi scored from a direct free-kick before teeing up Suarez with a superb scooped pass. That goal, Barca's second, confirmed Suarez's dominance in front of the Camp Nou fans, per OptaJose:

Spanish Football writer Sergi Dominguez was left in no doubt about how good Suarez is at the moment:

The former Liverpool man then stole a Neymar goal by prodding over from just on the line, before Messi pulled a surprise from the penalty spot.

Instead of scoring, the Argentinian No. 10 simply touched the ball off the spot into the path off Suarez, who smashed the gift home to complete his hat-trick. In the process, Messi relinquished the chance to net his 300th Barca goal:

Sky Sports La Liga provided images of the impish goal:

Midfield man Ivan Rakitic lobbed home a fifth for manager Luis Enrique's rampant team, before Neymar finally got his goal after a brilliant cross-field pass from Suarez set the Brazilian free.

Barcelona's firepower is easily the best in Europe and good enough to repeat last season's treble success.

Sevilla saw off Las Palmas at home thanks to a pair of goals in six second-half minutes. Industrious midfielder Ever Banega notched the first, before gifted striker Kevin Gameiro netted the second.

It's a result that at least keeps last season's UEFA Europa League winners in touch with the top four.

Earlier, Real Sociedad thrashed Granada thanks in part to an inspired performance from Mexican forward Carlos Vela. The former Arsenal prospect provided a pair of assists to help both Jonathas and Mikel Oyarzabal find the net.

Vela's first creative contribution was a delightfully clever lofted ball, while his second was a toe-poked pullback that let Oyarzabal complete his brace. Not quite the attacking force they were when Vela partnered Antoine Griezmann, Sociedad are still a side capable of producing real flair in the final third.

One player dominating in those areas this season is Eibar striker Borja Baston. He scored his team's first goal before an own goal condemned bottom-of-the table Levante to another dismal and costly defeat.

Baston's goal confirmed his status as the most prolific Spaniard on the continent, per OptaJose:

By winning the way they always seem to win, Atletico let the rest of La Liga know they remain firmly in the title race. Simeone's defensively rugged yet generally goal-shy team may not always be pleasing to the eye, but the 2013/14 champions have mastered a formula that has frustrated the big two before.

Yet, Simeone will know how ominously awesome Barca are looking at the moment. To make matters more daunting, Enrique's men also have a precious game in hand over Torres and Co.
