Thomas and Paul Go for 35 Points, 10 Assists in Same Game
Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul and Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas combined for an interesting feat during Wednesday's clash between their teams, as they became the first pair of players to both record 35-plus points and double-digit assists in the same game since Jason Kidd and Steve Nash did the same in December 2006, per ESPN Stats & Info.
Thomas ultimately got the best of the battle, with his Celtics pulling out a 139-134 home win in overtime, thanks in no small part to his two points and three assists during the extra period.
He finished the contest with 36 points, 11 assists, four rebounds, one steal and just two turnovers in 40 minutes, while Paul had an even gaudier stat line of 35 points, 13 assists, five rebounds, three steals, a block and only two turnovers in 48 minutes.
It wasn't quite a point guard battle on par with Nash versus Kidd, but with Thomas really coming into his own as a floor general since joining the Celtics, it should come as no surprise that Wednesday's matchup was such a gem.
Thomas' performance is made all the more impressive by the fact that he had to face Paul, who is widely viewed as one of the league's top defenders at the position.
Of course, Paul's big game was also quite impressive, as the Celtics have done an excellent job against opposing point guards this season, even though Thomas isn't much of a defender.
With fellow guards Avery Bradley, Marcus Smart and Evan Turner all capable of harassing opposing point guards, the Celtics are usually able to hide Thomas on one of the opponent's weakest players.
