Wednesday Recap

Hertha made hard work of inferior opposition on Wednesday night, as they dispatched second-tier side Heidenheim 3-2.

The Bundesliga outfit were prepared for a tricky night at the small Voith-Arena, and they struggled at times to overcome the hosts.

Arne Feick opened the scoring for Heidenheim after only 10 minutes, as the home crowd celebrated, but Hertha were back on level terms four minutes later.

Bosnian forward Vedad Ibisevic grabbed the equaliser for the capital city club and then put Berlin into the lead after 21 minutes.

Genki Haraguchi appeared to have put the game out of reach for the home side after he scored just before the hour mark.

However, a penalty from midfielder Marc Schnatterer gave Heidenheim brief hope with eight minutes on the clock.

Despite a frantic finish, Hertha hauled themselves over the line and into the last four of the competition.

Bayern made their superiority pay on Wednesday night, as they cantered past second-division side Bochum.

Robert Lewandowski continued his never-ending goalscoring exploits after 39 minutes, expertly combining with Thomas Muller, who played the Poland international through.

Squawka.com highlighted Lewandowski's outstanding performance value:

Bochum's Jan Simunek saw red shortly before half-time, adjudged to have fouled Arjen Robben in a soft decision, and the referee gave the defender his marching orders as the last man.

However, Muller failed from the resulting spot-kick, as he watched goalkeeper Manuel Riemann make the vital save to keep the hosts in the tie.

Fox Soccer's Ross Dunbar commented about the awarding of the penalty:

The fixture was killed off after 61 minutes, as Thiago Alcantara doubled Bayern's lead. The Spaniard forced the ball over the line after excellent work from Robben and Muller.

Lewandowski grabbed his brace in the final seconds of the match, as Bayern completed their expected procession to the semi-final.

Despite the nature of the win, Bayern were not at their best, and their form has taken a hit since manager Pep Guardiola was announced at the next Manchester City coach.

The Bavarian giants did not have to find top gear against a wildly inferior opponent in the German Cup, but Guardiola will need to thoroughly motivate his troops in his final months in charge.
