Arsenal's scoreless draw with Southampton means the Gunners find themselves in a familiar position after Week 24 of the 2015-16 Premier League season—in fourth place in the standings.

Manchester City, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur all managed to win on Tuesday, with the latter passing the Gunners in the standings thanks to a superior goal difference.

Spurs beat Norwich City 3-0, while a single Sergio Aguero goal saw Manchester City past Sunderland. Jamie Vardy struck twice for Leicester City, who remain on top of the standings after a 2-0 win over Liverpool.

Review

With all of the clubs expected to contend for the Premier League title winning on Tuesday, it was a bad night for the Gunners, who slumped to their fourth straight outing without a win and now find themselves five points behind Leicester City.

The new year hasn't been kind to Arsenal so far; Squawka Football shared this statistic:

Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil started together for the first time in 2016 against Southampton, and the fact that Arsenal's two best creative players failed to find any openings in the Saints defence is a bad sign moving forward.

Fans shouldn't read too much into a single result—Southampton crushed Arsenal the last time these two teams met—but their lack of scoring form is a real concern for the Gunners, particularly with a UEFA Champions League meeting with Barcelona on the horizon.

Vardy scored twice to keep Leicester City's Cinderella run going, as the Foxes beat Liverpool 2-0. The Reds may be enduring an inconsistent campaign, but manager Jurgen Klopp's men actually put together a solid showing at the King Power Stadium. Leicester City proved to be the more clinical side, and this win once again underlined that manager Claudio Ranieri's squad is to be taken seriously.

Per James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo, Klopp was full of praise for the Foxes:

Manchester City's title hopes took a big hit when star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne went down with an injury, but while his creativity was certainly missed against Sunderland, a single strike from Aguero ensured the team remain hot on the heels of the Foxes.

The Citizens barely looked like title candidates against Sunderland, but manager Manuel Pellegrini won't care one bit. Keeping the gap to Leicester City at just three points was far more important than playing beautiful football.

There were reasons to celebrate at Old Trafford, as Manchester United finally put together a solid attacking display at home to beat Stoke City 3-0. Per BBC Sport's Simon Stone, United played so well that one couldn't help but wonder what the season would have been like if they could have hit this kind of form earlier:

Anthony Martial once again stole the show with a sublime performance, scoring the second goal of the match and putting tons of pressure on the Stoke City defence.

The Frenchman will be one of the favourites to win this year's Young Player of the Year award, but he'll face some strong competition from Tottenham's Dele Alli, who played a key role in the win over Norwich City.

The 19-year-old opened the score and won the penalty Harry Kane converted to make it 2-0 before calling it a day, per Bleacher Report UK:

Kane added a second goal to his tally to make it 3-0, firing Spurs past rivals Arsenal in the standings in the process.

Further down the standings, West Ham United beat Aston Villa 2-0. Jordan Ayew was sent off early in the first half for throwing a needless elbow, and the Villans were on the back foot the rest of the way.

Bournemouth beat Crystal Palace 2-1, and Swansea City held West Bromwich Albion to a 1-1 draw.
