Newcastle Utd Top Premier League Table of Net Spend in January Transfer Window

Joe GallagherFeb 2, 2016

They might be struggling down the other end of the ladder but Newcastle United have ensured they sit at the top of at least one Premier League table.

The Magpies were the biggest movers in a largely underwhelming winter transfer window, adding Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend and Henri Saivet, with Seydou Doumbia joining on loan, for a total outlay of £28.5 million, reports the MailOnline.

Steve McClaren's side are followed by Watford and Stoke City, who made Europe's biggest signing in January by picking up Porto midfielder Giannelli Imbula for £18.3 million.

The likes of Bournemouth, Sunderland and Norwich City all boast greater net spends than the traditional clubs, though Manchester City made probably the move of deadline day by announcing Pep Guardiola would take charge of the club from next season.

This combination picture shows Bayern Munich's Spanish headcoach Pep Guardiola (L) and Manchester City's Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini gesturing during football matches.

City were possibly due a quiet January after a £101.3 million net spend in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea boast the lowest net spend of all Premier League clubs in January thanks to the sale of Ramires, while Manchester Unitedwho few would argue are in no need of a transferwere one of four clubs not to part with a penny in the winter market.

And title-chasing Tottenham Hotspur have managed to balance their books, with the sale of Townsend helping to bring their net spend in the entire 2015-16 season to £0.

Now, only a few months to go before the transfer window creaks open again.
