Arsenal will be quite happy if they don't see Diego Costa again this season.
Once again, the controversial Chelsea forward earned a red card against an Arsenal defender, this time slipping behind Per Mertesacker and appearing to be free on goal when the big German attempted a slide tackle and instead clipped Costa's leg, sending him to the ground.
Arsene Wenger remained diplomatic about the play after the match, per Bleacher Report UK:
That gave Chelsea a 10-man advantage for much of the game, and moments after the incident, Costa would score the game's only goal. NBC Sports Soccer shared his tally:
His goal may have wide-ranging implications, as Adrian Healey of ESPN noted:
It was certainly a disappointing result for Arsenal, though not all was lost on the day. The Gunners played extremely well despite being down a man and created chances for themselves throughout the match they couldn't quite finish.
Alexis Sanchez also returned as a second-half substitute, bringing energy and intent to Arsenal's attack. After a series of key injuries, the Gunners are starting to get healthy again, which is a major boost as they head down the stretch in a major title battle with Leicester City and Manchester City.
Getting back Sanchez—along with eventually getting back Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and Danny Welbeck—will be a major boost for a Gunners side that has its best chance to win a title in years.
Everton's hopes of playing European football next year are looking like a pipe dream, meanwhile. The Toffees suffered a 2-1 loss, at home, to Swansea City in a performance that was mostly drab from the home side.
Even manager Roberto Martinez echoed the sentiment that Everton simply came out flat.
"We were very slow in our performance, very pedestrian," he said, per the club. "The injuries affected our performance but the lack of intensity was a shame."
Ultimately, a lack of intensity tends to fall back on one person—the manager. Martinez and Everton looked as though they were grasping for straws on Sunday after having a decent run of play with strong showings against teams like Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea this month.
If they don't improve their defense, of course, a lack of intensity will hardly be the team's top concern.
