Las Palmas vs. Atletico Madrid: Winners and Losers from La Liga
Atletico Madrid stretched their lead at the top of La Liga after seeing off Las Palmas 3-0 on Sunday in an away game at Estadio Gran Canaria.
An opening goal from Filipe Luis and two goals from French forward Antoine Griezmann meant things were relatively comfortable for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone and his team.
Here are the winners and losers from the clash between one of La Liga's strongest sides and one of the weakest.
Winner: Antoine Griezmann
1 of 5
Where better to start than with the man of the moment?
Antoine Griezmann scored the second and third goals against Las Palmas to seal Atletico Madrid's victory.
Both goals were very similarly clear on goal and went past Javi Varas.
The goals allowed him to keep up his recent scoring streak, making it five in three games, or 11 in 11 games.
These strikes are keeping his team flying high when others are struggling to find the net—notably Jackson Martinez and Fernando Torres.
Griezmann is in golden form and will be aiming to bring that into the match against Barcelona in the Camp Nou on January 30. The game will be crucial in the title race.
Loser: Las Palmas
2 of 5
There is no shame for Las Palmas in going down to Atletico Madrid, even at home.
And until Antoine Griezmann got the visitors' second goal, in the 68th minute, the Canary Islanders were in with a shout of getting something from the game.
But moments before Atletico doubled their lead, Las Palmas midfielder Roque Mesa had a fine chance to equalise the game.
His effort zipped just wide of the post after a good move, with Willian Jose knocking it down for him to hit.
Just a minute later, Atletico struck and showed the fine margins that exist between survival and failure in La Liga.
Ranked No. 16, Las Palmas lurk near the drop zone. They are just one point ahead of No. 17 Granada and two points ahead of No. 18 Rayo Vallecano.
They will be spending the rest of the season fighting against relegation.
Winner: Diego Simeone
3 of 5
Earlier in the week FIFA announced Atletico Madrid would be banned from making transfers, bad news for the club.
However, Diego Simeone just wanted to get on with his business, going game by game.
And that's just what he did. Despite what had happened, Atletico showed their usual mechanical form and kept it tight at the back while being efficient up front.
They have let in just eight goals in 20 La Liga matches, an astonishing total, and Simeone is the cause of that.
The Argentine is famed for his ability to run a tight ship in more ways than one, with Rojiblanco defences rarely leaky.
Big news or not, this was the same old Atletico Madrid, marching on with a victory. If Simeone has his way, they will keep their feet on the ground in the weeks ahead as we approach crunch time in the season.
Winner: Filipe Luis
4 of 5
Filipe Luis opened the scoring for Atletico in this game, finishing off a pass from Juanfran by firing it into the far corner. It was his first goal since returning to Atletico Madrid in the summer.
He was always one of Diego Simeone's favourites, but his form since finding his way back to the Vicente Calderon has not been superb.
Filipe is, however, building up form. This was another good performance, and he capped it with his goal.
The Brazilian left-back was a crucial component for Atletico before he left for Chelsea, and he is getting back to that sort of status once again.
Winner: Koke
5 of 5
This has not been Koke's finest season, with the player more inconsistent than he should have been over the past few months.
However, like Filipe Luis, the longer the season goes on, the closer to his true form he gets.
Koke set up the two Griezmann goals, sliding the ball low, into the path of the Frenchman. Both assists were extremely similar.
The midfielder has a lot of work to do to get in Spain men's national team manager Vicente del Bosque's starting XI for Euro 2016, and he is starting to go about it the right way.
At Atletico, Koke is a key piece of the puzzle, regardless of his form. But good times seem to be coming for both him and his side. This was a good performance and something to keep building from.
