Mayo Done for Season After Falling Down Stairs
Thursday, March 10
The Bucks released a statement on Mayo's leg: "Milwaukee Bucks guard O.J. Mayo suffered a fractured right ankle on Thursday morning and will miss the remainder of the 2015-16 season, general manager John Hammond announced [on Thursday]. Mayo accidentally tripped descending his stairs at home."
The Vertical's Shams Charania reported that Mayo may undergo surgery.
Mayo a Major Loss for Depleted Bucks Backcourt
Mayo's season-ending injury is a difficult setback for Milwaukee’s backcourt depth.
He averaged 11.4 points a night for the Bucks last season, which marked the seventh consecutive campaign in which the former USC Trojan scored in double figures. Prior to fracturing his leg, he was averaging a career-low 7.8 points while shooting 37.1 percent from the field and 32.1 percent from three.
Mayo is arguably most valuable for the Bucks as a perimeter defender. Opponents shot 5.6 percent worse than their normal averages from the field last season when he was guarding them, per NBA.com, and he is athletic enough to stick with quicker ball-handlers and tall enough to bother shooters on the outside.
While Milwaukee will miss Mayo, it does have some other options in the backcourt.
Khris Middleton can drain it from three-point range, and rookie Rashad Vaughn is a high-upside player who can stretch the floor with his own shooting. However, with Michael Carter-Williams (torn hip labrum) already out, Milwaukee can ill afford another setback.
Look for the other guards to shoulder more of the offensive load until Mayo returns as the Bucks attempt to battle their way back into the postseason picture in the Eastern Conference.
