Copa Del Rey 2016: Results, Reaction from Tuesday's Round of 16, Leg 2 Games

Tom SunderlandJan 12, 2016

Sevilla and Mirandes advanced to the quarter-finals of this season's Copa del Rey on Tuesday, defeating Real Betis and Deportivo La Coruna, respectively, in the second legs of their round-of-16 meetings.

Mirandes upset the Spanish order by clinching an astonishing 3-0 win at the Riazor to seal a 4-1 aggregate victory, while Sevilla won 4-0 against Betis to triumph 6-0 over the two legs.

Daniel Provencio netted a brace, while Abdon Bastidas scored to seal a convincing result for tier-two Mirandes. Jose Antonio Reyes, Adil Rami, Kevin Gameiro and Gael Kakuta finished the job for an in-form Sevilla.

Having dominated their derby opponents 2-0 at Benito Villamarin last Wednesday, it was no great shock to see Sevilla emerge as victors at home this week, but the same could not be said of Mirandes.

The Segunda Division outfit ensured their fairy-tale run through the Copa del Rey lived on after Provencio gave his side a vital away goal in the first half only for Bastidas to pile on the hurt after the restart.

Mirandes' win was no fluke result either, and Provencio could be particularly pleased with his long-range opener. Marco Sangalli found space on the right before teeing his team-mate up on the edge of the area, and Provencio made the most of the chance with a low, arrowing shot inside Manu's left post.

That away strike meant Deportivo needed two to advance, but even that slim hope died away as Bastidas scored to heap further misery on the hosts before Sangalli and Provencio linked up again to add a third. AIK Fotboll striker Henok Goitom was astounded to see the hosts applauding the football of Tuesday's superiors:

Victor Sanchez's side entered the tie as favourites to build on a 1-1 away draw and advance, but Depor were clearly the worse side on the evening as second-flight Mirandes booked a surprise place in the quarters.

Sevilla had a far easier job in taking care of Betis at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, and it took Reyes just four minutes to get his side off the mark in the second leg before Rami doubled their lead in the 35th minute. The Guardian's Sid Lowe didn't give caretaker Betis manager Juan Merino's side much chance of a revival:

If morale was low going in at the break trailing 4-0 on aggregate, Betis' hopes were only condemned further when Gameiro scored within a minute of coming on as a substitute for Fernando Llorente.

The Frenchman evaded the offside trap to find space behind enemy lines and slot low into the bottom left, with compatriot and fellow replacement Kakuta joining him on the scoresheet in the dying minutes. Inside La Liga's Alexandra Jonson suggested it will be a tough period for Betis fans following the derby defeat:

The win means Sevilla, currently seventh in La Liga's standings, have now lost just once in their last 12 outings and are enjoying a three-match winning streak at present.

Despite the entertainment of that 6-0 aggregate hammering, though, the Copa del Rey will find it difficult to beat Mirandes' shock hammering of Depor. Third-tier Cadiz will look to beat that feat when they travel to Celta Vigo on Wednesday, but after losing the first leg 3-0, their chances are slim to none.
