Van Gaal Comments on Schweinsteiger Timeline
Friday, April 15
United boss Louis van Gaal said that Schweinsteiger will likely miss the rest of the season for the Red Devils, per a team tweet.
Low Comments on Schweinsteiger Injury
Wednesday, March 23
Germany boss Joachim Low announced the veteran midfielder has "injured his medial collateral ligament" and confirmed he is unavailable for both England and Italy friendlies.
As shared by Germany's official Twitter account, Schweinsteiger didn't train with Die Mannschaft on Wednesday after picking up a knee problem on Tuesday.
Arsenal's Mesut Ozil also didn't train on Wednesday after he travelled to Germany with an ankle problem suffered against Everton at the weekend, per the German football association's official website.
Fitness Problems Persist for Former Bayern Star
Schweinsteiger was one of the top players to move clubs last summer, leaving Bayern Munich for a foreign adventure in the Premier League. The veteran has struggled at Old Trafford, however, and a series of injures haven't helped matters, per Transfermarkt.co.uk.
According to WhoScored.com, he has started just 13 Premier League matches this season, which is far less than the Red Devils were hoping for.
When healthy, he's been solid, often paired with fellow summer acquisition Morgan Schneiderlin to give United a strong buffer in front of their defence.
Schweinsteiger wasn't bought to be a solid midfielder, however, and he's yet to fully establish himself as the game-changing player he was with Bayern. This latest setback will only complicate matters, although United have the depth to cope with his absence.
Between Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini, the Red Devils boast a lot of power in the central areas, while Ander Herrera adds another strong option.
Manager Louis van Gaal will likely be hoping for a swift recovery for Schweinsteiger, but United should be just fine with the options they have available moving forward.
