El Shaarawy previously confirmed the move in a tweet on Monday:
He told Roma TV he is looking to prove himself in the Italian capital, per the club's website:
"I've joined Roma to show what I can do—to myself, the coach and the Italian game as a whole. I hope to repay the faith the club is showing in me, and therefore, I want to give 100 per cent when I play to try and achieve great things here."
The 23-year-old moved to Monaco last summer in a loan deal that would become permanent once he played a set amount of matches, and per La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Football Italia), the French club decided to drop him just before he reached that mark.
Once regarded as one of the top talents in Italian football, Il Faraone's career has been plagued by injuries since his breakout campaign in 2012-13, per Matteo Bonetti of beIN Sports:
Known for his incredible raw pace, trickery and vicious shot from outside of the box, he never fully adapted to Milan's new attacking system once Mario Balotelli joined, and he spent more time on the sideline than in top form.
The Rossoneri were patient with the youngster but finally decided to move on last summer, and Monaco gladly took a chance on him, hoping he could adequately replace Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, who left the club for Atletico Madrid.
El Shaarawy looked in solid form early in the season but saw limited opportunities in France, and as the season progressed, it became clear Monaco were not going to turn his loan into a permanent move.
Bonetti is hopeful that he can re-find his previous former with more playing time:
The Italy international was in desperate need of another move in January to boost his profile ahead of a possible selection for Euro 2016. When he's at his best, he's undoubtedly a great addition to the national team, as you can see in the video below:
He remains an intriguing talent, and at just 23 years old, he still carries enough upside to warrant the loan deal. If he can avoid any major injuries, he still has every chance of unlocking his vast potential.
Roma needed a replacement for Juan Iturbe, who moved to Bournemouth on loan, and in El Shaarawy, they landed a player with upside who already knows the league and should adapt to his surroundings quickly. It's a smart move for the Giallorossi, who could use a boost to their attacking output.
