"Vincent will be an important help for the defence," said City boss Manuel Pellegrini, who confirmed the defender is in Tuesday's squad to face Newcastle.
Fears Expressed for Kompany's Long-Term Future
It’s been a season of huge frustration for Kompany on the injury front. Having started 2015-16 emboldened after a patchy 2014-15, he has suffered multiple setbacks as the campaign has progressed.
The Boxing Day game with Sunderland was typical of Kompany's recent fortunes. After being introduced as a substitute with City enjoying a commanding lead, the defender hobbled off, noticeably distressed.
Against Kiev, having only recently returned to action, he was forced off again. BBC Radio 5 live commentator Andy Townsend expressed fears over the 30-year-old's career.
"In the prime of his career this is a chronic problem he's having to deal with and the club have to seriously think about the lad's long-term career here because this injury is such a persistent one that he is going to have a serious, serious issue with this if he's not careful," he said.
City must look to find a solution at the back that can help minimise the issues that surface when their captain isn’t in the team.
Eliaquim Mangala has only shown his best alongside Kompany, while Martin Demichelis is a faded force. In the summer, this might be new manager Pep Guardiola's No. 1 priority.
