Player in Non-New Year's 6 Bowl Game to Watch
Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU vs. Oregon: Alamo Bowl, Saturday, Jan. 2 at 6:45 p.m. ET on ESPN
Outside of Clemson's Deshaun Watson in the Orange Bowl, the Alamo Bowl might have the best dual-threat quarterback this postseason in TCU's Trevone Boykin.
Boykin, who has had time to recover from an ankle injury that saw him miss the Horned Frogs' Nov. 21 game against Oklahoma, should be good to go after six weeks of recovery time.
The TCU quarterback combined for 40 touchdowns in 2015, even though he missed a game. Watson, who was a Heisman Trophy finalist earlier in December, played in two more games than Boykin and scored just one more touchdown.
He can do it all and has earned respect from the opposition as well:
Even though he'll be without leading receiver Josh Doctson, who racked up 1,326 yards this season, Boykin is versatile enough to carry the offense by himself. He's completed 64.8 percent of his passes this season for 3,574 yards with an additional 612 on the ground.
He's something that Oregon hasn't seen before either, as Ducks defensive coordinator Don Pellum told Ryan Thorburn of the Register-Guard:
"Of the quarterbacks we’ve faced this season, this is probably the first guy that really can run and will run it. A lot of the offenses we’ve faced, they’re spread offenses, but the quarterbacks aren’t running much. They’re holding you with play-action pass fakes. This guy takes off and he’s really good, so you do have to account for him in the passing game as well as in the run game.
"
Boykin possesses a strong arm that can break open Oregon's defense over the top along with the accuracy to drop in some attempts in tight windows. Add that to his ability to extend plays with his legs, and he should be able to pick the Ducks defense apart.
With Boykin in the lineup, TCU is averaging 44.8 points per game. He'll surely have a field day against an Oregon defense that gives up 36.8 points per game, ranked 113th in the nation. They also have the third-worst passing defense, which gives up 301.2 yards per game. All of those factors point to a huge day for Boykin.
