Daily Fantasy College Football Bowl Week 2: DraftKings Value Guide, Top Sleepers

David KenyonDec 26, 2015

The second week of bowl season brings five games for the daily fantasy college football slate.

Locating sleepers will help you compete for a victory in DraftKings contests, but identifying those value plays can be tough.

We'll use recent performances, trends and matchups to project breakout performances. Players listed are among the lower and middle prices at their position.

Michael Brewer, QB, Virginia Tech ($5,900)

While there really aren't many low-priced options at quarterback, Michael Brewer is the best option under $6,500.

Brewer has thrown for at least 237 yards and two touchdowns in each of his last two games. Plus, per Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times, Brewer said he hasn't felt this good physically since the season opener vs. Ohio State.

And the junior quarterback hasn't had a matchup this appealing. Virginia Tech is preparing for a clash with Tulsa, the nation's fifth-worst pass defense.

Excluding a matchup against triple-option Navy, Tulsa has ceded five straight 300-plus-yard outputs and five multi-passing touchdown games to quarterbacks in the last six.

Projection: 310 pass yards, 3 TDs

Terrell Newby, RB, Nebraska ($4,000)

Following a second-week explosion, Terrell Newby faded into the fantasy background as a boom-or-bust player before missing time due to an ankle injury. Jacob Padilla of Hail Varsity noted offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said Newby is healthy again.

Imani Cross is expected to handle the early-down responsibilities, but Odds Shark projects a 6.5-point victory for UCLA over Nebraska. However, Newby's anticipated role brings pass-catching—and points per reception—upside.

"When they have three receivers on the field or when they're in a third down situation, the No. 1 guy will be...Newby," Jon Nyatawa of the Omaha World-Herald said.

Newby certainly doesn't come without risk, but every other running back with a $4,000 price tag is either No. 3 on the depth chart or part of a three-headed timeshare. His 15 projected touches give opportunity to ascend beyond value.

Projection: 41 rush yards, 1 TD; 4 REC, 32 yards

Bucky Hodges, WR, Virginia Tech ($4,200)

Technically listed as a wide receiver, Bucky Hodges is arguably the top tight end taking the field on Saturday.

Not only is he Virginia Tech's second-best target, Hodges will be the zone-breaker of the Tulsa defense. Using the middle of the field is critical to break up Cover 2 calls.

Hodges has caught at least three passes in five consecutive games, and he should double that mark on Saturday. Tulsa's rapid offensive pace will give the Hokies a couple of extra possessions.

The 6'7", 241-pounder is a matchup nightmare with 25-point upside.

Projection: 6 REC, 82 yards, 1 TD

Jaydon Mickens, WR, Washington ($4,200)

Slowly but surely, Jaydon Mickens has solidified himself as Washington's best wideout.

He's registered five receptions or more in four straight outings, topping the 50-yard mark each time. Mickens eclipsed the 100-yard barrier and also scored a touchdown.

Southern Miss has a relatively pedestrian pass defense, which is ranked 65th nationally. The Golden Eagles have surrendered 400 yards and three touchdowns in their last two games.

Mickens is Washington's top-targeted receiver, yet he only costs $4,200.

Projection: 6 REC, 88 yards, 1 TD; 8 rush yards

Anthony Nash, WR, Duke ($3,400)

Odds Shark projects 72 points for the Pinstripe Bowl, so Duke and Indiana players may have slightly higher ownership. However, Anthony Nash might get overlooked.

Although Max McCaffrey ($4,700) and T.J. Rahming (3,900) have value, too, Nash's $3,400 price tag allows a little extra room for expensive running backs—and he's been the most consistent lately.

The junior wide receiver has recorded 12 points or more during three consecutive contests—and that's without catching a touchdown. Nash has emerged as Duke's big-play threat, catching 52- and 49-yard passes in the last two games.

And Indiana? Well, that secondary is not so good. The Hoosiers have the worst pass defense in the nation. Nash has a perfect matchup to continue both trends and reach the end zone.

Projection: 5 REC, 102 yards, 1 TD
