Jean Delance Tweets Top 3: Which School Most Needs the 4-Star OL?

Damon SaylesDec 22, 2015

For Mesquite, Texas, 4-star offensive tackle Jean Delance, a lot goes into choosing a college. After weeks of researching his multiple offers, Delance tweeted his top three schools late Monday afternoon.

And when Delance makes his verbal commitment on Jan. 2 at the Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Florida, he'll choose one out of the three Power Five conferences—the Big 12, the Big Ten or the SEC.

Delance tweeted Texas, Michigan and LSU as his top three schools. He made official visits to LSU and Michigan earlier this month and has made unofficial stops to Texas, but all three programs would benefit from having the nation's No. 10 offensive tackle and No. 90 overall player.

At 6'5" and 291 pounds, Delance possesses good size, strength and—perhaps more important to the college coaches recruiting him—a noticeable drive to get better each day. The one-time Oklahoma commit has the tools to be a starter as a freshman and the work ethic to ultimately take an incumbent starter's job.

Delance spoke with Ryan Bartow of 247Sports.com about his three finalists on Monday. He said that he likes that LSU is looking for depth on its offensive line, and he's a fan of where Michigan currently is and could be under head coach Jim Harbaugh.

The school that many believe to be the one to beat, however, is Texas. Although he hasn't taken an official visit, Texas is a school he has kept an eye on, regardless of the team's 5-7 record this season.

"I believe in them," Delance told Bartow. "They tell me they will be back on top soon. ... they play a lot of true freshmen. The numbers don't lie."

All three programs are good fits, but the Longhorns may be the team that needs him the most. The Longhorns are losing three linemen to graduation in right tackle Marcus Hutchins, left guard Sedrick Flowers and center Taylor Doyle. One of Delance's best assets is that he's versatile enough to play either tackle or guard effectively at the next level.

Additionally, Texas needs bodies—let alone elite-level players—in its 2016 recruiting class. The Longhorns only have 12 commits, and head coach Charlie Strong is still looking to land an offensive tackle pledge. Texas has two offensive guards committed in 3-stars Denzel Okafor and Tope Imade.

LSU could use Delance, as well, as the Tigers—with 16 pledges—have only two offensive lineman pledges in 4-star guard Donavaughn Campbell and 3-star tackle Jakori Savage. Of the three schools, Michigan has the most attractive class to join. The Wolverines have 23 pledges, and 13 of the 23 are 4-star athletes. Michigan has the No. 2-ranked 2016 class nationally behind Ohio State.

Michigan's top-ranked commit is 4-star tackle Ben Bredeson. Joining him in the class are guard Michael Onwenu and tackles Devery Hamilton and Erik Swenson, all 4-star linemen. Harbaugh and his staff have done a solid job of recruiting Delance, dating all the way back to April when the Wolverines offered him.

That Michigan class as a whole is expected to be talented, but the competition also will be fierce for playing time, particularly on the offensive line. This is something that both Texas and LSU hope will play to their advantage. If Delance commits to LSU, he becomes the top-ranked offensive player in its class. If he chooses Texas, he becomes the top-ranked player overall in its class.

Look for Delance to make a well-thought decision public on Jan. 2. He told Bartow that he will let the coaches of the winning school know his plans for his announcement on Dec. 31.

"When my mom arrives in Florida [for the Under Armour game], I'll talk it over with her one more time before I make [the decision]," Delance told Barlow. "I'll base my decision on playing time, the degree you can get, how the coach is close to my family, especially my mom and grandma, and how the position coach has recruited me."
